MO - Facebook sex scam with underage girl/Corey McKinley arrested
Here's an interesting story. It sounds as if the "informant" is not being charged as he went to police right away, even though he had sexual contact with a minor, who he was told was of age. I'm very pleased as this seems to make sense to me. I can't imagine being in that man's shoes. He must have been embarrassed, ashamed and terrified of being charged....but he still did the right thing.
MO man faces child porn charges in blackmail scheme
"Federal prosecutors charged a Kansas City man Friday with producing child pornography in a blackmail scheme involving Facebook, a 16-year-old girl and a 30-year-old man. Corey M. McKinley, 34, and the 16-year-old were in custody Friday after the 30-year-old man, whom authorities described as an "informant," told police that he was being blackmailed by the pair.
On March 28, the informant told police that the girl had contacted him on Facebook and had said she was 17 years old. After chatting online and meeting once for sex at a Kansas City house, the informant and girl met a second time. During that tryst, McKinley allegedly entered the room and told the informant that the girl really was 16 and that the two had been filmed having sex the previous day. McKinley purportedly demanded $400 to keep quiet...."
"...Searching the girl's cell phone, investigators found several images of child pornography involving McKinley and the girl, and the informant and the girl...."

The "informant" is lucky they aren't charging him (apparently), considering in some states even if he was misled about the age, it wouldn't matter if the person he had sex with was under the age of consent. Do I think it's fair? No. It does not seem fair to charge someone for having sex with an underage person if he was misled about the age, and it was reasonable for him to assume the age was actually over the age of consent. Considering that if the girl is 16 so she could easily pass for being 17, I presume.
