NY - Bronx Teacher accused in strip search
The investigation into the alleged strip search of four boys in a Bronx school found that a teacher was somehow involved in the humiliating act, the Department of Education said yesterday.
The unidentified teacher at PS 186X, the Walter J. Damrosch School, was reassigned to a special education regional office in Manhattan, a spokeswoman for the department said. Julio Passaro, the family worker accused of forcing the boys to take off their clothes and jump up and down after a teacher reported a ring missing, was suspended without pay, the spokeswoman said. Further action is pending a disciplinary conference.
Based on our investigation of the facts, these employees should both be terminated," spokeswoman Margie Feinberg said in a written statement.
Feinberg said she could not specify the actions of the teacher, except to say he was "somewhat involved in this incident."
"If what I read in the paper is true, then the teacher and the other employee shouldn't be working in the Department of Education," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. "It's an outrage if it is what has been alleged."
A civil suit filed by the boys' parents against the department and Passaro said Passaro strip-searched the boys, who are 10 and 11 years old, April 2 after a teacher lost a ring.
