CA - Unnamed boy, 11, Sequoia National Forest, 22 April 2011

Authorities are searching for an 11-year-old boy who went missing in Sequoia National Forest.

Fresno County Sheriff's Lt. Victor Wisemer says the unidentified boy was hiking with his family along Highway 180 when he disappeared around 6 p.m. Friday.

Sheriff's officials resumed their search on Saturday. Wisemer tells the Fresno Bee crews are looking for the boy from the air and ground.

I've been to this area and camped many times. The key word is that the family was hiking. To me that signifies a day trip. It is being reported by the Fresno Bee. Fresno is a big City at the foothills of the Sierras. Taking a day trip is common for a family to have a picnic and go for a hike. The foothills are somewhat populated and have the feeling of ranches as you leave the Valley I would say 3500 ft in the foothills. As you drive to further elevation it becomes more rugged with Pine Trees and less population. If you were just on a day trip you wouldn't continue as the elevation and temps can change rapidly.

That happens a lot when the media initially reports a story and it drives me nuts.

I mean, I realize that if you find a kid wandering in the forest... it is a good idea to call someone no matter what their name or description. But on the off chance the kid was abducted and taken out, or walked and made it out... having the name and picture out there is a good idea.

However, that is how it works when a kid goes missing in the mountains most of the time... they are initially "a 12 year old boy" and then later are identified. Also factoring in that the parents will often have to come off the mountain to get a picture of the child... Good thing is that a lot of them are not missing long enough to be named in the media.

The New Jersey family was visiting the Yucca Flats area when the boy disappeared, he said.

The boy's father had helped him down a steep hillside to a location he thought was a safe area and then went back up a short distance to assist other family members, Wisemer said.

When the father turned back around, the boy was gone and there were slide marks leading to the water, Wisemer said.

On Saturday, the Fresno County Sheriff Department's helicopter spotted a couple pieces of clothing that belong to the boy, investigators said.

An 11-year-old boy who went missing Friday evening along Highway 180 in the Sequoia National Forest accidentally slid into a fast-moving stream while hiking with his family, a Fresno County sheriff's spokesman said.
Articles of clothing identified as the boy's were discovered downstream today, but the boy has not been found, said sheriff's Lt. Victor Wisemer.

Seems an 11 yr. old would yell if he started slipping and sliding towards the water. Supposedly, the dad was very close by.....
    IMO
