FHP: Drunk Mom Crashed Car, Killing Daughter

32-year-old Melissa Johnson, was traveling 80-90MPH when she lost control, went into a ditch, hit a tree and flipped over. Her 14-year-old daughter was ejected from the vehicle & pronounced dead on scene. Troopers said the 14-year-old was not wearing a seat belt. Johnson's three other children in the car, ages 10, 11, and 16, suffered minor injuries and were transported to an area hospital. FHP officials said Johnson was under the influence of alcohol, and possibly other drugs, when the crash happened. http://www.wftv.com/news/27649687/detail.html?cxntlid=cmg_cntnt_rss

Can we have a sticky thread dedicated to DUI deaths? I rank this as having little difference than killing with a gun or other weapon.

"was under the influence of alcohol" Alcohol does not take your hand and put keys in it and say drive. Why blame alcohol?

I simply cannot believe this kind of stuff still happens, and with all your children in the car! Unforgivable!

So sad. It's nothing other than incredibly selfish to get behind the wheel, drunk, with all of your kids in the car. This woman doesn't deserve to be a mother.

How very sad! Wow she was only 16 when she had her first child and then the next at 18. She started really young. RIP 14 year old. Poor girl.

DCF: Mom Did Not Have Custody Of Teen Who Died In Crash

I just ran across this update to this story. The Department of Children and Families said the children should not have been with their mother in the first place. Melissa Johnson's sister is the legal guardian of all four children. A 16 year-old daughter was killed in the DUI crash.

Apparently the mother/driver was fleeing from boyfriend, Leon Chisholm, in an incident related to domestic violence. Friday's incident was just the latest case of domestic violence between the two. WFTV checked with Orlando police and there was a violent encounter between the two in September of last year. The report says Chisholm and Johnson threatened to kill each other.

Johnson took her kids to Alabama and DCF awarded custody to their aunt, which leaves Florida's DCF seeking answers. "A critical question we have unanswered right now is how she was reunited with her children," said Carrie Hoeppner, Orlando DCF. Florida's DCF now has Johnson's three surviving children in its custody.

Awww...Her children all deserved better than that. The survivors now have to live with the
terrible memories of the crash that killed their big sister, who no doubt, was much like a mother to them all. Bless Their Hearts.

From June 2012:

A mother accused of crashing her car while driving drunk with her four children — fatally injuring her 14-year-old daughter — was sentenced to 10 years in prison Thursday morning in a plea agreement.

Melissa Shonvette Johnson, 33, pleaded no contest to aggravated manslaughter of a child, a first-degree felony, and was convicted and taken into custody.

She will serve four years' probation after the prison term. She was also barred from ever holding a driver's license.
