Montreal police find body of girl missing 12 years

Police announced Wednesday that they have found the remains of Jolène Riendeau, a 10-year-old Point St. Charles girl who went missing in April 1999.
Montreal police Sgt. Ian Lafrenière refused to say where the remains were found or under what circumstances, citing the ongoing investigation to locate a suspect in the case.
“Sadly, what we can say is that it was definitely a homicide,” Lafrenière said.

The way these articles are written, I'm left wondering:
- did they find an actual body or some sort of remains?
- did they find remains from a little girl or a young lady (no mention of when she was murdered)
- They're saying with certainty it was a homicide. What tests have been done / what state were the remains in that allow them to say so with such certainty?
- Where exactly was this poor person found?
- Did they have any suspects ever over the years? One article I read noted they were interviewing witnesses in this case... one has to wonder why? Perhaps the suspect was under their noses this whole time?

I do hope we are provided with more information as the investigation continues, and of course, I hope that the case is solved and someone can be brought to justice over this.

RIP Jolene. Her family will finally have closure after 12 long years. Condelences to her mother and family.

The police just said on TV they have a very serious suspect. They don't want to give any details for now to avoid compromising the investigation.

RIP Jolène Riendeau

I hope justice will be served.

For the tight-knit community, wedged between the Lachine Canal and the St. Lawrence River, Jolène's disappearance so long ago was in fact the latest.

Hill didn't know Tammy Leakey, a 12-year-old girl who went to a dépanneur to buy milk and candy in 1981, and was later found in a Dorval industrial park, raped and murdered. That case remains unsolved.

But she was close friends with Sharron Prior, who disappeared Easter weekend in 1975 on the way to a pizza place to meet with friends, and has not been seen since.

So the man who was arested was known to police? Could he also be the perp responsible for the murder of Sharron Prior? How many others?

I would have my doubts about that as Sharon disappeared in 1975 and the person arrested is only in his 40s now so he would only have been 13 or younger in 75.

Police confirmed the arrest Friday morning and said the man has been brought in for questioning.

"Whether or not he will be charged is extremely hard to say," said Sergeant Ian Lafreniere of Montreal police.

The suspect is known to police, has a criminal record, and lived nearby Riendeau, though police wouldn't say how well the suspect knew the girl or her family.

above post was intended to direct one to video.original LE on case states something to the effect of," not someone you would think would do something like this"

I have to think that LE had an extremely credible tip, since Jolene's remains were found, and a suspect was arrested so quickly.

I also have to say, that when I first noticed Jolene's picture, I thought she looked alot like Cedrika Provencher, still missing.

RIP, Jolene.

I have to agree that the two girls look a lot alike. Over the years when I would see their missing posters I would always be unsure of which was which. When hearing the news that Jolene had been found this week I wondered if the same persion could be involved.

oh. wow. Cedrika is a dead ringer for a little girl in my son's class. I mean, right down to every facial detail.

The spokesperson said police are being very careful about what they make public, as investigators need to know, when they are questioning a suspect or a witness, if they are talking to someone who has genuine information on the homicide or someone who is merely repeating what he or she heard from the media.

Lafrenière said investigators have been led down false paths in the Riendeau case before.

More details to come

I hope they plan to release the info if they don't plan to arrest him. Not cool to know there's a child killer out there running around and police won't say who he is if they know.
