Academy Award nominated actor Jackie Cooper has died ... TMZ has learned.

Cooper -- who was nominated for an Oscar when he was 9-years-old -- passed away yesterday at a hospital in Beverly Hills after a sudden bout with illness.

Cooper was highly respected director in his adult years -- winning Emmy awards for his work on "M**advertiser censored*S*H*" and "The White Shadow."

Cooper famously played the role of The Daily Planet newspaper editor in the 1978 "Superman" film.

RIP Jackie.

Was it Jackie that had so many troubles (abuses) as a child actor that he helped to either create or work to ensure that child actors are protected? I thought it was him but I might be wrong.

Despite their age diffs, Cooper was often enough confused with Coogan. I've looked him up over the years, glad he was still alive.

88 is a good long life.
