NE - Doctor charged with neglect, lost daughter at church

Not sure how I feel about this one..

    http://www.omaha.com/article/2011050...lect-at-church

I would file this under just being astoundingly naive and careless. When my kid was younger I never let him out of my sight, well, almost never. I cannot get my head around his not feeling this was a big deal and not knowing where a seven year old was while the rest of the family sat in church.

I still wonder if an investigation my turn up more serious things.

I think he should have been warned... not have charges filed..
at 7 I would have probably figured my child headed up to the balcony if they were just outside the door tying a shoe...

Most states have mandatory reporter laws - police, nurses, MDs, social workers are OBLIGATED to report. I don't think this will go anywhere, sounds like an honest mistake any of us could have made.

'Rate MD's' is one of those doctor rating sites, I often find it interesting to read reviews although I don't take some too seriously. FWIW, here's one for awhile ago on this doctor:

I just think it's interesting, he's a pediatrician. It'd be like a geriatric specialist losing his 85 year old mother at church.

I hate to say this. But I think the officer was wrong in this case. The child was 7, not 7 months. If the child had been found in the car at 7 months, then I would say charge him. But this child was old enough to get out if she got hot. And she hadn't been told to stay in the car. Doc may have been a little leinent, but I don't think he was neglectful. At age 7 my kids would sometimes meet up with friends and sit with them. I usually insisted that they let me know where they would be, but at church maybe wouldn't have been too strict about it. Esp if it was a church where they knew people and were known.

We are very comfortable at our church. My kids get out and run inside usually before we finish gathering our belongings from the vehicle. They love their Sunday School classes and their Children's Church. My husband and I usually just go on to our class. My youngest is four, but loves to try and keep up with her brothers. While I usually check through the window in her classroom door to make sure she made it there, I do not check on her brothers, ages 7, 9, and 11. If one of them decided to go back outside into the parking lot, I probably wouldn't know it until someone spotted them and told me. In this case, a cop spotted the child. I really think he should have just notified the parent that he found the child. No charges are really necessary here, unless the child appeared to be uncared for, in distress, or other signs that validated further examination.

my daughter is 7 - and I still don't let her out of sight at church. But I also have to check her in, and we get a little tag thing that gets matched up to her name tag. All the way through 5th grade parents have to pick up their kids.

When I was 7 I was sent to church with my bro's and sister. Often ditched, thank you very much. I sometimes sat in church, sometimes sat in the pre-school. oh, remember the days when your parents sent you off so they could read the paper and have coffee alone in bed (and maybe some smush smush).

Heck, sometimes I played out back of the church.

I think this is going a little too far, and the punishment certainly doesn't fit the ermmm, crime.

Okay, this seems like overkill. A warning should have sufficed. Without there being a history of the doc leaving his kids unattended I guess I just don't get it.

The disparity between cases that we see here is just mind boggling.

We have children with DCFS constantly receiving calls that they are being abused, eventually to be killed, and NOTHING is done to the parents til a child is hospitalized or dead. Then we have this guy and the homeless mother from another thread who appear to be loving parents who exhibited one moment of inattention or made one bad decision - neither life threatening, and they are prosecuted.

sigh. Some days I really wonder where we are all going. Stop this crazy coocoo ride, I want off!
