Crazed knifeman decapitates British woman in busy Tenerife shopping centre and runs through the streets with her head

A British woman was today decapitated by a madman with a machete on the holiday island of Tenerife.

The crazed killer attacked the 62-year-old without uttering a word in a shopping centre in Los Cristianos, in Tenerife.

Witnesses said he then fled the store with the severed head in his hands, with blood dripping to the ground.

Mr Kirkby added that it was so surreal he thought the scruffy man, aged in his 20s, was carrying a joke head.

I could hear people shouting and screaming and the guy was walking along the footpath slowly muttering to himself carrying the head it was very surreal, he said.

I couldnt hear what he was muttering and seemed to be oblivious to everything around him and was sort of rambling.

He was holding the head by the hair and I couldnt help but think of the image in the Clash of the Titans where a man is beheaded.'

That is sick!! OMG, that poor woman.

That reminds me of the Greyhound Bus murder in Canada a few years back.

My two experiences with Tenerife in the media are this murder and the plane crash back in the 70s that killed 583 people. -_-

The alleged killer is an unemployed Bulgarian apparently well known in the town and occasionally given to loudly proclaiming himself to be God on earth.

Wow. Of all the ways to die, who would ever imagine they would be beheaded by some lunatic in a supermarket.

I hope it was quick and efficient and he wasn't hacking this poor woman to pieces slowly while bystands watched and did nothing (like the passengers on that bus in Canada or where ever that watched the schizophrenic hack a guy up and start eating him).

The path has been cleared for a man who beheaded and cannibalized a passenger on a Greyhound bus two years ago to take escorted strolls around the grounds of the mental-health facility where he’s being treated.

Deyan Valentinov stalked the poor woman for nine days. She was shopping in a store that carried souvenier swords and blades. It is believed he used one as the weapon.

Dang! Poor woman.

What an utterly gorgeous place and the poor woman gets beheaded there.

OMG How unbelievably horrid!

I have always wondered if after the beheading if there still wasn't a few seconds of consciousness? .......... actually realizing your head has been removed from your body before death occurs. SCARY.

Marie Antoinette and all that. Honestly I would not worry about AFTER the beheading, a few seconds of consciousness would be surreal at worst.

This guy was not a professional so that after part is likely nothing compared to the before part, bystanders say "he was stabbing at her". Doesn't sound like a clean blow or even two, sounds like he butchered her in the grocery isles. It was likely quite horrible.

The predominant school of thought is that the sudden loss of blood pressure following decapitation would result in instant unconsciousness, Linda. Unless she saw the blade coming, she probably never knew what hit her. (ETA a botched beheading is something else. Based on Sonya's post, I'm afraid this was quite an ordeal.)

But one of my favorite oddities from history is that during the Reign of Terror following the French Revolution, scientists attempted to construct tests to see how long consciousness remained in severed heads.

Some of the results are in the link below (and seem to question the prevailing view that unconsciousness is instantaneous), but I always picture a Frenchman bent over and shouting into the basket where severed heads were collected, shouting "'Allo! 'Allo! Comment ça va?"

Assuming the brain does remain conscious the worst part of a "quick" beheading would have to be feeling your head/face smash into the basket or ground.

This conversation reminds me of the movie "Severence".

I am guessing he has paranoid schizophrenia. This appears to be the same old story over and over again-someone is kept in a mental hospital for a short period of time, doctors claim he is no threat, he is let out, and the rest is history.

The alleged attacker was well known in the area and she reported him for threatening behavior? What, was it too much to call the police and get him arrested? That poor woman did not have to die.
