Carla Vicentini was last seen leaving a bar and grill in Newark, New Jersey, during the early morning hours of February 10, 2006. At that time, she was thought to have been intoxicated and was seen with an unidentified white male. She told a friend that she was going outside the bar to the man's car to view a photograph. She has not been seen since she left the restaurant.

Carla was a Brazilian exchanged student living in Newark. It is believed Carla returned to her residence, as her wallet, passport, and jacket were found there. A few days after she disappeared, someone called her bosses cell phone and screamed for help, but it's not known if it was Carla.

Search continues for Brazilian student who vanished after leaving Newark bar 4 years ago
February 2010

Joan Petruski’s life mission is to find missing people, but the case of Carla Vicentini, a Brazilian student who vanished after leaving a Newark bar four years ago, is personal to her.

[snip]

Vicentini, and friends of the family, hope the billboard reminds law enforcement officials that Carla is still missing and refreshes the public’s memories about her and what they saw the night of Feb. 9, 2006 in a bar in Newark’s Ironbound.

Brazilian National last seen at 2:00a leaving a bar on Ferry Street with a heavy set, sullen man with blue eyes and salt and pepper hair. Portuguese speaker, very little English. Vincentini's boss received a call from an unknown number days after her disappearance, where whoever was on the other end was screaming "HELP!"

If anyone speaks Portuguese the following link is to what seems to be a hearing of a Brazilian Senate Committee which focuses on this case. It hears from Carla's mother and (if I understand correctly using Google Translate!) some very specific allegations are made about named individuals. This seems to be information not available in any other sources and may provide new avenues of interest.

Can anyone offer their language expertise to provide a translation or summary?

Agreed, however it still is an open case and should be kept in the light. The FBI have even offered a $20,000 reward in her case, so they have not given up. I would assume no surveillance footage was available, though it is a shame since even 10 years ago it was quite common to use for most businesses. I am still hoping this one gets solved.

I posted on the LISK thread; Carla bears some physical and demographic similarities to some of the LISK murder victims, in particular Megan Waterman. Carla was 22, 5' 7" and approximately 140lbs; Megan Waterman was 22 at the time of her disappearance, 5' 5" and approximately 140lbs. If you compare pictures side by side, there are even similarities in their smile and cheeks. Carla disappeared from Newark in 2006, one year prior to the first known LISK victim's disappearance, Maureen Brainard-Barnes. Hopefully Carla will be found but there seems to be many coincidences regarding her disappearance and the LISK murder victims.

The FBI wants help finding these missing N.J. residents
It's been more than 10 years since anyone saw or heard from Carla Vicentini.

The 22-year-old native of Brazil was last seen in the early morning of Feb. 10, 2006, leaving Adega Bar and Grill in Newark with an unknown man after telling a friend she was going to his car to look at a photograph.

She never returned. And she's not the only one.

I posted at #5 above, linking to a Brazilian Senate hearing into the case. Unfortunately that link is no longer active and I cannot find a replacement. However, I did find a senate news report which (if you use Google translate, which seems to have improved since 2015) gives some of the information from the hearings. Specifically it identifies Carla's mothers suspicions about the role of the person Carla was staying with and her roommate. Whether she has any real grounds for this suspicion is unclear (the full hearing transcript may make that more clear if it can be found). What this report does suggest is a line of enquiry different to the 'last man she was seen with' line seen to date. There has been comment in other reports about doubts regarding the account of the roommate, since Carla's jacket and wallet were found in her room and she was seen by others returning from the bar - but it is interesting that the mother was prepared to make her views known so publicly at an official hearing. The report is at https://www12.senado.leg.br/noticia...esclarecer-desaparecimento-de-carla-vicentini .

I wonder if she could have been a victim of human trafficking. I would think she would be a good target for a pimp to abduct: pretty young woman, in a strange country with no contacts or family to speak of, poor native language skills, low-income in her host country.

Yes, I agree with you. That was the first thing that came to mind when I read her updated charley project page. I had no idea the circumstances behind her disappearance until now. I really think she was abducted

Thoughts & Views: Have you seen this woman?

Thoughts & Views: Have you seen this woman?
BY THE OBSERVER STAFF ON 17 FEBRUARY 2015

This is the story of Carla Vicentini, who came to New Jersey from Brazil as an exchange student on Jan. 19, 2006. She was 22 years old.

According to the press release, Vicentini promptly found employment at a White Castle Restaurant on Route 46 in Ledgewood, and for a couple of weeks she resided at the Roxbury Motel in that town.

Then, on Feb. 5, 2006, she and a roommate, also an exchange student, began renting an apartment on Ferry St. in the Ironbound section of Newark, the neighborhood just over the Jackson St. bridge from Harrison.

Vicentini’s roommate worked as a waitress at the Adega Bar & Grill, located at 130 Ferry St., and “during the early morning hours of Feb. 10, 2006,” Vicentini went there to visit her friend, the FBI said.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., Vicentini left the bar with an unidentified white male she had apparently met in the Adega lounge.

SNIP

The FBI said the man was described as white, of unknown nationality, having a fair complexion, light eyes, and short salt-and-pepper hair. He was approximately 30 years old (nine years ago), about 5-foot- 8, weighing 200 pounds, with a stocky build.

Vicentini, a native of Brazil, spoke Portuguese and limited English. She was described as about 5-foot-7, 140 pounds, with brown eyes and blonde hair.

She has multiple body piercings and three tattoos: a gray angel on her back, a red and yellow chameleon on her left hip, and a “tribal tattoo” on her lower back.

She is listed by the federal agency as a kidnapping victim.

SNIP

the Newark Division of the FBI announced it is offering a reward of up to $20,000 “for information leading to the location of Carla Vicentini or information leading to the identity of the person(s) involved in her disappearance.”

SNIP

Hoping against hope, until and unless a body is found, somewhere, there is still the chance that Carla Vicentini may be alive. Somewhere.

But if she is not, the least her family in Brazil deserves is some form of closure.

And in either case, the person responsible for her disappearance deserves to be brought to justice.

Roxbury is very close to me (next town over from where I grew up), I never knew that Carla worked at the White Castle, which was pretty new at that time I think built 2004/2005 IIRC. The Roxbury Motel is not the type of place you would be staying unless your other option was a box, and even then I might take the box.

I'm curious what kind of exchange program hosts 22 year old women?

Any chance there is a connection to a murdered au pair from Sweden, presumably abducted after leaving a nightclub in Boston? They look similar, imo, speculation.
The Swedish Nanny Murder, Boston's Most Famous Cold Case
"One of the most tragic and strange murders in Boston history occurred on June 23, 1996. Karina Holmer, a 20-year old Swedish au pair, disappeared outside a Boston nightclub at three o'clock in the morning. Less than 12 hours later, her severed upper body was discovered in a Back Bay dumpster by a homeless person. The murder has never been solved, and remains Boston's most notorious "cold case."
"Holmer was stranded outside the nightclub Zanzibar, which was located at Boylston Place in Boston. It was reported that she was intoxicated, and her friends had left her by herself. Police reports indicate that she was last seen walking up Tremont Street between Bolyston and Park Streets".
Ws thread..

I grew up very close to Roxbury too. I think you're right that the White Castle opened around that time..
I'm also curious what kind of exchange program hosts a 22 year old woman too. That's a very good question.
