Search teams continued to scour 23 miles of the river from Cedar Point, Ind., to the Ohio River, in an effort to find the remains of 17-month-old Mitchell O'Banion.
Looks like there's no chance he may be still alive.

    RIP little guy.

I think that one of them should have stayed in the area, instead of BOTH going for help.

Lots of good questions in the comment section of that first article. Besides the obvious one (who takes a baby, without a secure flotation device, kayaking in a flooded river???), inquiring minds want to know if anyone saw them *with the baby* while launching the kayak. When's the last time anyone besides the parents saw the baby?

It's terrible to be so jaded, but we see this time and time again....

Why would the parents take a 17 month old kayaking? Kayaks are completely unstable. I understand being on a boat but NOT a kayak. Bad parenting in my opinion. Praying for this poor child.

I see Sophieness beat me to it.

Approximately 50 people are assisting with the search along with experienced kayakers working along the shoreline.

Emergency officials are considering this incident a tragic accident.

The search area set for Friday is about 24 miles long.

Catron said there was no date set to call off the search.

Although the river level has gone down some, the current remains swift, officials said. With such conditions, Catron said, divers will only enter the water if there is a high confidence that something will be found.

On Thursday, a camera was found and Catron said officials are trying to determine if it belongs to the family.

This is heartbreaking. So many little kids lost to preventable things lately. I hope for a miracle.

Not to mention the river was 5 feet above flood stage.

"The boy’s parents are Carmen Sickmeier and Lawrence Obanion of Independence, Ky. They are not experienced kayakers, according to officials."

I do feel for these parents but I have one word to say <modsnip>. I can not beleive they took a 17mth old in a kayak on a flooded river and didnt put his life jacket on properly.

If you look in the comments of the first news link posted above, a lady who has a child with the father of the baby missing, says they bought the kayak as the love the outdoors and went last week and took her son as well....she says they are easygoing people and dont think of the bad that can happen......

I am sorry but this one has made me angry as well.....
