A little more info. It seems a bit odd to me that a woman inside the home at 2 am would see a masked man throwing the rock and that her husband would be able to instantly give chase. The address quoted in the article comes up as being connected with a Unitarian Church. I don't know if it's the actual church or simply an office.

    They've identified the chemical:

Chemical thrown through window clears homes

"....Police believe the chemical was somehow thrown along with the rock through the window of the home early Friday morning. The chemical, which was determined to be a concentrated form of butyric acid, continued to bother residents and investigators hours after the incident took place. Butyric acid is an irritant that can affect the eyes, nose and skin..."

    and

"....Officers with the Laguna Beach Police Department were notified of the incident at 2:47 a.m., when a woman called 911 and said a man wearing dark clothing and a mask threw a rock through the window of their home..."

    and

"....Authorities believe a plastic bag carrying butyric acid was also tossed in or attached to the rock. An unknown device is believed to have also been tossed inside, but was deemed safe. The fumes seemed to dissipate but, hours later, at around 9 a.m., residents again began to complain about watery eyes, sore throats and other symptoms. Officers evacuated the apartment complex. Surrounding buildings were also cleared...."

That address is registered to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Laguna Beach. If it's similar to our town's Unitarian Church, they also offer a venue for classes and music.

Here's a sketch of the building by an artist who must have a studio there. It looks as if there is a rooftop patio. Possibly the couple was sitting on the patio and saw the man with the rock approach.

    wow
    someone doesn't like them

wonder what kind of altercations/confrontations they've had recently

the potential that it could've been more serious is quite frightening

Hmmm. Butyric acid was used by anti-abortion activists to disrupt clinics where abortions were performed throughout the 90s. Please note that I am NOT starting a discussion about abortion, I'm merely linking to this article as it mentions butyric acid and the damage it can do.

The Unitarian Universalist Church is known to be quite liberal with their beliefs. Possibly, this might not have been a personal attack but rather an attack on the church itself.

That doesn't explain the "stalking" message, though. I wonder how hard it is to buy this chemical?

ETA: It can be purchased at home and garden centers and even on Amazon, where 5 grams costs $10. It's also been used by activists to protest Japanese whaling.
