Denver police name suspect in kidnapping, assault on 8-year-old girl

The search for the kidnapper of an 8-year-old Denver girl took on added urgency Friday as the FBI joined the hunt, concerned that the man may have committed the same crime before and may do it again.

The FBI has pursued child-abduction cases before, but this one stands out because of the aggressive nature and speed with which the man snatched the little girl Thursday afternoon, said Dave Joly, spokesman for the FBI.

Bret Lee Luckett Thompson Being Sought By The FBI For Sexual Assault On A Child

On June 2, 2011 at about 1:20 p.m. an eight-year-old girl was abducted for approximately an hour and a half, and while she was initially believed to be unharmed, police soon determined she was sexually assaulted.

Almost just as quickly, Denver Police obtained an arrest warrant for 27-year-old Bret Lee Luckett Thompson and the FBI joined in on the pursuit.

Today, the Denver District Attorney's office filed charges.

"We know it's this guy," FBI spokesman Dave Joly told the HuffPost. Joly also explained the FBI became involved partly because the victim involves "a child of tender years," and also because there's a real possibility Thompson is in another state.

Charges filed against at-large kidnapping suspect

Formal charges were filed today against the man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl in Denver last week.

Bret Lee Luckett Thompson, 27, remains at-large and faces one count of second-degree kidnapping and one count of sexual assault on a child, according to a news release from the Denver District Attorney's Office.

Both charges are felonies.

I sure hope they find this guy soon. He needs to be removed from society before he hurts another little girl. Poor thing. I hope she is doing okay and is getting appropriate therapy.

EDISON, NJ -- Bret Lee Thompson, the man wanted for the kidnapping and sexual assault of an 8-year-old Denver girl, was in police custody in New Jersey Monday.

Law enforcement sources tell FOX31 Denver Thompson, 27, was captured in Edison, New Jersey by the Newark Safe Streets Task Force.

Sources say he was sleeping in a van near a Walmart store when authorities arrested him

Suspect in young Colorado girl's assault arrested in N.J

The man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting an 8-year-old Denver girl could be returned to Colorado in the next few weeks after he was arrested early Monday while sleeping in his van behind a New Jersey Walmart.

Bret Lee Luckett Thompson, 27, was the subject of a nationwide manhunt following the June 2 incident in southwest Denver.

Officers located his van just after midnight EDT Sunday in North Brunswick, N.J., said FBI Denver spokesman Dave Joly.

Thompson was alone and sleeping in the back of the vehicle.

"It was very good news," said Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey.

NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. - Authorities say it could take months for a man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl to get back to Denver from New Jersey if he decides to fight extradition.

Bret Lee Luckett Thompson, 27, was arrested in North Brunswick, N.J. on Monday after authorities found him sleeping in his van behind a Walmart.

He has not said if he would fight extradition back to Colorado. An extradition hearing has been set for Monday

DENVER - The man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting an 8-year-old Denver girl and running from the law will soon be on his way to Colorado. Bret Lee Luckett Thompson, 27, was arrested in North Brunswick, N.J. on June 13 after authorities found him sleeping in his van behind a Walmart.

Monday afternoon, he waved his extradition with means he will be transported back to Colorado within the next two weeks, according to Lynn Kimbrough, spokeswoman for the Denver District Attorney's office.

DENVER -- After an 11-day nationwide manhunt, a man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl made his first appearance in a Denver courtroom Saturday morning.

As Thompson walked up to face the judge, he looked directly at FOX31 Denver cameras and flashed a smile that quickly turned into a frown.
