Even reading the name "Joachim Kroll" produces an involuntary shudder 50 years on.

100 years ago - 1912 June 5 - Mr. and Mrs. Rollin Hudson are slain in their Kansas home with an ax like weapon. Some think that suspected serial mass murderer Henry Lee Moore may have been responsible but he was never charged. Moore was later convicted of killing two family members and sent to prison but was released in 1949.

50 years ago - 1962 June 6 - In Sydney, William MacDonald murders Patrick Hackett, his fifth and last known victim. The killer this time only mutilates the victim's genitals rather than actually severing them. MacDonald panicked and fled leaving Hackett's body in his shop. This led to his arrest and prison incarceration for life where he still resides.

50 years ago - 1962 June 14 - Fifty-five-year-old Anna Slesers is found dead from strangulation in her apartment. She had also been interfered with sexually and is believed to be the first victim in the officially unsolved Boston Strangler serial killer case. As will prove to be typical for this murderer, Mrs. Slesers was a woman who lived alone.

50 years ago - 1962 June 22 - Fifty-seven-year-old Paula Lepro is found dead in her apartment. The victim had been strangled with her own stockings and sexually assaulted with a foreign object. 50 years ago - 1962 June 28 - Eighty-five-year-old Mary Mullen dies from a heart attack. She had not originally been on the Boston Strangler victim list but in his questionable confession Albert DeSalvo claimed the death was a result of him startling Mary in her apartment.

Thanks for taking the time to keep posting these interesting cases/facts. I enjoy reading about these older cases, some of which I hadn't heard about until I read about them here.

What an interesting thread. It shows that life wasn't idyllic in the "olden" days, either. Which is all very sad when one thinks about what humanity has done to itself, even as far back as Cain.

150 years ago - 1862 July 7 - A servant lady named Jessie M'Pherson is found axed to death on the bed in her quarters. Jessie M'Lachlan, a fellow servant and supposed friend, was charged with the murder and found guilty by a Scottish jury. She was sentenced to hang but this was later commuted to life in prison. No adequate explanation has been found for the flare-up.

100 years ago - 1912 July 13 - Bessie Mundy is found deceased in a bathtub from drowning. She was the new bride of George Joseph Smith, the Brides in the Bath Killer, and is believed to be the first of his three known victims. Mr. Smith's motives were financial gains from inheritance and life insurance settlements as well as the thrill he got from killing. He was eventually convicted of the murders and paid for his crimes at the end of an English noose in 1915.

100 years ago - 1912 July 15 - An eighteen-year-old girl in service named Dora Grey is found strangled on a Yarmouth beach. Ms. Grey had a bit of a reputation but the autopsy showed that she died a virgin. There were no signs of a struggle on the beach so she had apparently been dumped there after being murdered elsewhere. She had last been seen with a sandy haired man in a straw hat who appeared to be in his late 30s but he was never identified and the murder was never solved.

100 years ago - 1912 July 16 - Herman "Beansie" Rosenthal is rubbed out in a New York restaurant by a four man hit squad from the Jacob Zelig gang. A crooked cop, Lieutenant Charles Becker had set up the hit to keep the gangster from turning rat. The gunmen, Harry "Gyp the Blood" Horowitz, "Lefty" Louis Rosenberg, "Dago" Frank Cirofici and Jacob Seidenschmer aka Whitey Lewis, were all executed for the crime in the following year. Becker was able to delay his date with the electric chair until 1915.

250 years ago - 1762 July 17 - Russia's Tsar Peter III is assassinated in a palace coup apparently instigated by his wife Catherine the Great and her guards. He'd only been on the throne since January.

Note: Russia was still on the Old Style Calendar then so there it was July 6 but in most of the rest of the world and by today's calender it was July 17.
