$5k reward offered for Amburn’s return

    by Leah Justice
Man still missing after almost a year
Almost a year after his disappearance, a $5,000 reward has been offered for the return of Thomas “Tom” Amburn of Columbus.

The reward was offered recently by the Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation.

Amburn, who was 51 years old at the time of his disappearance on April 19 last year, was assumed lost on a hike on White Oak Mountain, just behind his residence off Houston Road in Columbus.

After about a week of extensive searching by local and state rescuers, the search and rescue operation was turned over to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office as a missing persons case.

Just before Christmas last year, rescue crews searched the mountain again for any sign of Amburn. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office sought the help of N.C. Project Lifesaver, a non-profit organization that provides technology and assistance for a variety of missing persons cases.

Other searches of the mountain have since been conducted by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation was established to assist families, such as that of Tom Amburn, who are in circumstances similar to those the Carringtons experienced. In 1999, three female sightseers, Carole and Juli Sund and Silvina Pelosso, disappeared and were later found murdered near Yosemite National Park. While they were missing, Carole Sund’s parents, Francis and Carole Carrington, posted rewards for their safe return and for information regarding the whereabouts of their rental car. The Carringtons say they believe that the reward postings and the media attention they received helped locate the car, which gave them the first break in the case.

The Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation has assisted in the location of six missing persons and the apprehension of 25 murder suspects and one child molester/attempted murderer. To date, the foundation has paid a total of $165,500 in rewards to citizens.

Amburn was last seen wearing gray sweat pants and a gray work shirt. He has surgical scars on his abdomen and right side. He has gray hair and is approximately 5’8” tall and weighs 241 lbs.

Sheriff’s office officials say other searches of the mountain are currently being planned, with another large-scale search scheduled to take place next month.

If you have any information regarding the whereabouts of Thomas Amburn, please contact Det. Sgt. B.J. Bayne of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office at 894-6078.
