Maybe one of the pair got in trouble in the water and, in a panic, pulled the other under when s/he tried to help. I'm totally speculating, but I've never heard of murder/suicide by drowning in a swimming pool.

He says the couples' friends told authorities only one of them could swim. The coroner says 26-year-old Chunyang Zhang was a swimmer who probably tried to help her husband, 29-year-old Fanjun Meng, who couldn't swim.

A drowner tends to panic and become very dangerous to a rescuer. I don't know what they recommend nowadays, but when I took lifeguard training at the Y many years ago, they suggested grabbing the drowner by the hair and pulling him or her to safety that way.

From that angle, it's supposedly difficult for the drowner to get a hold of you and pull you under.

Even better is throwing a flotation device to the drowner or extending some sort of pole so that the drowner can't latch onto you and pull you under.

All this IIRC.
