    UT - David Brown, 37, Moab, 29 June 2011

    July 5, 2011

A Halifax man has disappeared in Utah and his family fears for his safety.

David Brown, 37, has been teaching at a skydiving school at Moab, a small town in Utah, for the past two months.

His sister and parents last heard from him Wednesday and Brown hasn't shown up for work or updated any of his social media sites in almost a week.

"All of Dave's personal credentials, belongings, remain untouched in his place of residence, including significant amounts of cash, his credit card, his green card, his passport," she said Tuesday.

"He literally has disappeared with the shoes on his feet, the clothes on his back, in the middle of the desert, without any of his base-jumping gear, his skydiving gear. Without a vehicle, without a bicycle. So that raises great concern."

A skydiving instructor last seen a week ago in eastern Utah left behind cash, a passport and his driver's license, said an acquaintance who is helping in the search.

David Brown, 37, disappeared June 29 in the vicinity of Skydive Moab, said owner Clint MacBeth. MacBeth found Brown's personal items, including an unspent paycheck.

Brown's family in Halifax, Nova Scotia, filed a missing persons report Saturday with the Moab Police Department and is seeking the public's health.

According to MacBeth, Brown recently went through a divorce and friends initially assumed he has gone to Las Vegas to visit his girlfriend. But they later realized he wore only shorts, a T-shirt and sneakers, making him unequipped to deal with 100-degree-plus temperatures, MacBeth said.

A local police report has been filed, however, an incredible unofficial search and rescue effort is being launched. Although informal compared to State run operations, this rescue effort is being collaborated and largely driven initially by the incredible connectivity of Facebook. Dave’s roots and family are based in Atlantic Canada yet his friends from all over the United States, as far as California and Hawaii, are communicating in an attempt to find Dave safely. Introductions are being made quickly and all involved are sharing information, resources and ideas on how to best proceed with search and rescue efforts. All informal search and rescue efforts are being coordinated with the Moab Police Department.

"He came into my house and we spoke. Then he went outside. That was the last time I saw him,” said MacBeth, the owner of Skydive Moab. “I just thought he was going to the [travel trailer] out back. Later on, I thought it was odd that he didn’t come back inside, but I didn’t really think much of it right away.”

Originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Brown has lived in the United States for 10 years and came to Moab to work with Skydive Moab about two months ago, MacBeth said on Wednesday morning. Brown currently holds a skydiving world record and is a former national skydiving champion who has logged more than 30,000 jumps, MacBeth said.

Family members are canvassing Moab's main strip and paragliders plan to scan the foothills of the southeastern Utah town for any sign of a skydiving instructor missing more than a week.

According to an email from Brown’s sister, Wendi TeKamp, the dogs picked up Brown’s scent and identified several places of interest.

Another canine-led search is expected to be held today.

Given that this is also occurring in Moab... I feel the need to tell you all about Danelle.... another very athletic person who fell victim to the unforgiving landscape. She was dressed for a quick run and spent 2 days... severely injured and bleeding internally. Even those who knew of Danelle's unbelievable drive were convinced she was dead.

We don't know for sure that David doesn't have water with him. Maybe he headed out for a hike and was injured, just like Danelle. He could easily have water... that isn't a "belonging" you can check for like ID or anything else.

Powered paragliders soared over portions of the Utah desert in search of a missing Canadian man on Saturday, but there was no sign of the 37-year-old skydiver.

Tekamp said it's simply unclear whether her athletically built brother wandered into that land or walked into the town.

"Leaving today I have no certainty today on what the possibilities can be," she said.

She said the concern is the desert is an unforgiving landscape and that if her brother was injured, it would be difficult to survive without water.

Just saw this link (posted by luckyducky on May Milling thread, thanks)concerning a man who had been missing for a long time - then surprisingly found, alive and well.It just goes to show that sometimes people choose to leave former lives behind and also that hope springs eternal!

RCMP revealed last week that Tree, 67, was located following a six-month investigation and is alive and well. Staff Sgt. Grant Learned would not say what led police to Tree, other than that officers followed up leads.

Learned told The Daily News last week that investigators have confirmed there was no foul play, accident or misadventure and that Tree simply left town on his own accord and doesn't want his location made public.

Family Friend Dani Mellian said she doesn't believe Tree has family or knows anyone out east.

There is also the story of Aron Ralston who had to cut off his own arm to hike out and survive. He survived unbelievable odds.

Police don't suspect foul play, and now family members are worried Brown may have been injured and is awaiting help in the hot, summer sun.

Ground searches with dogs turned up Brown's scent. But then the leads went cold.

"I'll keep going until there's nothing else to follow,"
Moab Police Chief Mike Navarre told the Deseret News July 10.

Paragliders have ended a search for a missing Moab skydiving instructor without finding a trace of him.

Ryan Shaw, owner of Paradrenalin of Phoenix, said he can “guarantee” that Brown is not in the large swath of back country that he and two other paragliders thoroughly searched.

It will be the family’s call as to how long to continue a volunteer search
    for Brown, Choo said.

I know many of you like to actually SEE the people talking.
So here are a couple of videos.
Including the last person to see David. (Who "can cry no problem...")

    The high school friend
    The police chief
    David's girlfriend

Some reports say they have "ruled out foul play."
I certainly hope it is actually that they "have no evidence of foul play."
Ruling it out before you find David...
When he "walked outside, turned a corner and disappeared..." doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

I will let those wiser than I get more information from the videos... and wait to see how it pans out. Hopefully he just took off like Melanie Gould.
Maybe the visit from his girlfriend freaked him out... commitment or something.

They have thoroughly searched the 3 mile radius around where he was living.

He was living in the motor home of his good friend of more than a decade.

A good friend who's also his boss... who can cry, no problem.

He was very active online and was last online more than 24 hours before his disappearance.

He walked outside, turned a corner and vanished.

    http://thechronicleherald.ca/Metro/1253032.html

"We’re confident that we literally turned over every rock within a three-mile radius of where David was living," TeKamp said during a news conference Monday in the backyard of her north-end Halifax home.

Until his disappearance, Brown had been living in a motorhome parked outside the home and office of his boss, Chris MacBeth.

Brown was very active online, both through Facebook and email
, TeKamp said. He left his laptop in the motorhome and his family now has complete access to his online accounts.

TeKamp said Brown was last online sometime shortly before noon on June 28.

MacBeth is believed to have been the last person to speak to Brown. But that conversation was just passing chit-chat in the office, MacBeth has said.

Buckland said they also have a few ideas on a new direction for the search, but he would not elaborate.

"We’re going . . . to find him, whether it was foul play or if he’s just gone somewhere. We’re going to find some kind of trail of him; we just haven’t done it yet. It is frustrating."

My question is, why would someone, like a skydiving instructor, keep $4,000 at his residence, stored in a backpack, which is so portable? If one was keeping that kind of cash at his place, wouldn't you at least stash it somewhere more secure? Watching the interview with Clint MacBeth made me wonder whether he may have an idea who might have seen David after he left MacBeth's place, even though David never stated where he was heading. Obviously, marijuana is coming to mind, and the two best buddies may know the source of it. $4,000 is one big habit, but probably something more serious than just plain consumption is at play here. Look for signs of indoor and outdoor pot farms and known sources of cannabis in the area.

David didn't have a bank account.

I'm not sure if he couldn't or chose not to, but that's why he kept his cash.
