Canada - Richard Oland, 69, brutally murdered, St John, NB, 7 July 2011

Saint John is in the grips of the most sensational crime to come along in decades, a senior source in New Brunswick legal circles said Wednesday.

The grisly murder of high profile businessman Richard (Dick) Oland — a one-time beer executive with Moosehead — is the talk of the Maritime city with many wondering when an arrest is going to be made.

“The Olands are a big deal with Saint John. The only ones that would trump them are the Irvings,” the source said, referring to the legendary Irving oil family.

Oland’s body was discovered nearly a week ago in his Saint John office and as of Tuesday still no warrant had been issued for the arrest of the person or persons involved in the axe murder, the Toronto Star has learned.

"This is not a situation where we have somebody randomly going around and assaulting or, you know, doing something to individuals," Reid said. "It's an isolated situation."

Reid said a forensics team is processing the scene and officers are interviewing potential witnesses.

Officers used sniffer dogs to search the area for evidence and canvassed people in neighbouring buildings.

"He was certainly driven," said museum CEO Jane Fullerton. "He was passionate. He was focused on getting things done. He had an ability to bring people together and to get them to work together to get things done."

Oland was honoured as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1997, for his efforts as an entrepreneur with a social conscience.

When not hard at work, Oland raced yachts, winning races around the world, including the International Rolex Regatta in St. Thomas in 2010.

Sgt. Glenn Hayward said officers arrived at the house around 12 p.m. AT on Thursday.

There were at least three forensic vans at the house and about six unmarked police cars.

The canine unit was also on the property and they've been searching both the house and the barn.

In August, Jackson ordered the release of seven heavily redacted search warrants along with related documents. They show that police believe Oland, 69, was murdered.

The also show that police seized 57 items from a home in the Saint John suburb of Rothesay that property records say is owned by Dennis Oland, Richard's son. Those items include legal papers, bank statements, garbage bags, bedding, clothing, a purple purse and a "note in a purse."

The records also reveal that police searched a 7.6-metre yacht named Loki, which was docked at the Royal Kennebecasis Yacht Club in Saint John. The name of the boat's owner is blacked out, but the record says "genealogy papers/books/documents" were sought.

The released documents relate to searches police conducted at the home of Oland’s only son, Dennis Oland, on July 14; a car owned by an unnamed person the same day; a sailboat co-owned by Dennis’ wife, on July 21; the CIBC on King Street, where Oland “primarily” did his operational banking, and for CIBC Wood Gundy on Chipman Hill, where Dennis Oland worked as an investment advisor.

Among the 378 items police have seized to date were Oland's financial records, the lint trap of the dryer of his son’s home, a forensic swab of a red drop on his daughter-in-law’s boat, a receipt from Kent Building Supplies, dated July 7, 2011 — the same day Oland’s body was discovered in his uptown office, the documents show.

Sedlacek, a local real estate agent, told police they had been in a romantic relationship for eight years and she believed most of his family was aware of their affair.
