Flier distributor at Casey Anthony trial gets 292 days in jail, $500 fine

OMG REALLY??
ORLANDO --
A man who broke an order from Judge Belvin Perry during the Casey Anthony trial will spend the next several months in the Orange County Jail.

Mark Schmidter returned to the Orange County Courthouse on Thursday for his own trial for contempt of court charges.

Schmidter was arrested on June 29 after deputies said he was passing out fliers outside the "free speech zones" set up outside the courthouse during the trial.

From the Orlando Magazine - 50 Most Powerful - No. 39 - Judge Belvin Perry Jr.

http://www.orlandomagazine.com/Orlando-Magazine/July-2011/50-Most-Powerful/

Perry runs the Orange-Osceola court system, which handles more than 600,000 cases a year. But Orlando—and possibly the nation—knows him as the by-the-book jurist overseeing the Casey Anthony trial, which has put him back on our list after a seven-year absence. Perry is an active, founding member of 100 Black Men Orlando, which helps put African-American students on a college track, and he also chairs the Florida Innocence Commission, created to identify and correct the causes of wrongful conviction and incarceration. 2004 Rank: 27

Adam H. Kurland - The National Law Journal - July 26, 2011
"When you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." — Sherlock Holmes

There was a finite universe of possibilities as to what happened to Caylee. When you rule out the impossible, the prosecution's proof — sufficient to support a conviction — becomes irrefutable. Too bad not one juror saw fit to press that view for even one full day.

Our criminal justice system will survive this unpopular verdict. The defense counsel's tactics are far more troubling and need to be reviewed carefully. Casey's defense counsel delivered an opening statement which now, in retrospect, has been characterized by many of the commentators who closely followed the trial as "game changing." However, the opening statement was at best, ignoble, and at worst, ethically troubling.

Adam H. Kurland is a professor of law at Howard University School of Law in Washington and of counsel to Coburn & Greenbaum in Washington. He is the author of numerous law review articles and a book on dual sovereignty and double jeopardy. He is a former assistant U.S. attorney, and he has also represented federal criminal appellate defendants across the country for the past 21 years.

"I've had multiple offers to purchase it, but George and Cindy do not want to profit off it by any means," Lippman told WESH.

---(gets in a foundation plug)...

The Kelley Blue Book lists the normal value on a used Sunfire at about $3,000, but Lipman said it could go to a collector for more than that. The money would be donated to the new foundation the Anthonys are establishing in memory of Caylee Anthony.
