NC - Al'quon Flowers, 18, Wilmington, 19 July 2011
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) --It has been more than a week since 18-year-old Al'quon Flowers went missing. Brunswick County deputies and Wilmington Police are still looking for the man whose family says his background may have had something to do with the incident.
"He's just a child that has been caught up in a situation that's not his own making," Al'quon's great aunt Theresa Greene said.
Flowers disappeared July 19. Family members say they are sure he was targeted as part of some sort of gang violence.
"Some of his brothers are in gangs," Greene said. "There are situations that have happened that I think is a retaliation from some of the stuff that they have done."
"He's a follower, but as far as him being in a gang, you know, he just followed his brothers," Al'quon's father Garry Hines said. "They're his brothers."
They believe opposing gang members kidnapped Flowers because of past events his family was involved with.
Flowers was last seen on an unknown block of Red Cross Street on Tuesday, July 19, at about 3 p.m. His family believes that not long after that he was taken to Brunswick County.

NC dad says teen son missing 4 years has been found dead
The father of a teen who has been missing since 2011 said sheriff’s officials told him they believe they have found the remains of his son on Hooper Road in Brunswick County.
Garry Hines, Al’quon Flowers’ father, said Thursday that he finally has a sense of closure and relief.
“He’s a good kid, always been a good kid,” Hines said of Al’quon, who himself was a father of a young girl.
“When Al’quon came to live with me, we hit it off good. He was my best friend. He taught me a lot. I miss him. He’s my son. What I want, I’m never going to get. The closure I got today is just going to have to be good enough,” Hines added.
Al’quon Flowers was 18 years old when he went missing in 2011, two months after a murder incident at Club 609.

BOLIVIA -- Human remains found Nov. 5 in Leland are confirmed to be those of Al’quon Flowers, a Wilmington teen who went missing in July 2011, according to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.
The remains found in the woods at the end of Hooper Road were confirmed to be Flowers after a pathology report from East Carolina University in Greenville.
Investigators discovered the remains after a federal inmate who was a suspect in Flowers’ disappearance led law enforcement officers to the remains of the 17-year-old, said K.J. Tully, who led the investigation into the Flowers case.
In 2011, Tully said there was not enough evidence to charge the lead suspect, Alan “LA” Johnson, 26, in the Flowers case, but Johnson was sentenced in 2013 to 50 years in federal prison for two Wilmington robberies. Both of those robberies occurred within days of Flowers’ disappearance.
