RCMP ask for help in finding Fisher Branch woman

RCMP have reissued a plea for information to help find a missing woman from the Fisher Branch area.

It had been believed that Swenty, who is five foot three, 150 pounds with brown eyes and long, light brown hair, was travelling to British Columbia with Russell Gordon McDiarmid, 51, in her red pickup truck.

The Mounties said July 31 that McDiarmid had been located. Swenty's truck was found in the Fraserwood area that same day.

RCMP are still searching for Nancy Swenty, who was last seen July 27 at her Fisher Branch home.

Constable Line Karpish says one of the keys to the investigation is the 33-year-old's truck, which was found in the Fraserwood area on July 31.

Karpish says RCMP would like to speak to anyone who saw the truck between July 27 and July 31. She says it could play a major role in determining Swenty's whereabouts.

The truck is described as a 1990 Chevrolet S-10 pick-up truck with the license plate BNU 721.

Anyone with information about Swenty's disappearance can call Crimestoppers at 786-TIPS.

5 p.m. July 27- Nancy Swenty was last seen at her home.

July 28- Failed to show up for work. Family members filed a missing person report.

July 30- RCMP issued an alert for 51-year-old Russell Gordon McDiarmid, who they believed Swenty may have been travelling with. Just hours later, McDiarmid contacted police and did not know Swenty’s whereabouts.

July 31- Police find Swenty’s red 1990 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck.

Sadly, another body found, and it appears this will be Nancy

RCMP have found a body in the Rural Municipality of Fisher, southeast of Poplar Field, and are trying to determine whether it's that of a woman reported missing last month.

Police were called to the area on Saturday evening, when a group searching for Nancy Swenty found a black "Co-op" jacket along the roadway.

Thanks for that lstrel !! The body found at Lockport Dam was subsequently identified as a 19 y.o. native girl, Tiffany Maureen Skye, who disappeared from the Winnipeg MB area August 8. Although Tiffany's body was found at the Lockport dam, about 50 miles from where Nancy Swenty's vehicle was located in Fraserwood, at this time I don't necessarily see any similarities in age, ethnicity, or circumstances (although the geographical proximity might ultimately tie them together somehow).

However, there was another woman, 40 y.o. Carol Nora King, who disappeared from Herschel, Saskatchewan on August 6, nine days after Nancy Swenty. Although Herschel is about 650 miles from Fisher Branch, MB, it is certainly done easily in a nine day period. Carol's vehicle was also located not far from place last seen, and her body was located not far away in a canola field.

Some online articles state that Carol was being harassed and was going to be filing a report at the nearby Rosetown detachment. That major possibility aside, here's where I see some similarities ...

Nancy and Carol were both single women who lived alone in a rural area, both were slightly older victims (not teens or twenties), both were caucasian, both disappeared along with their vehicles that were located later, apart from their bodies.

Probably nothing, but something was tugging at the back of my mind, and I finally got it. A strange little coincidence probably, but ... back in 1997, on July 28, 22 y.o. Caralyn King disappeared from Edmonton AB and her body was found in a canola field east of Edmonton. (Although 14 years prior, July 28 is the same date that Nancy Swenty disappeared; similarity of the names Carol King / Caralyn King; both Carol King and Caralyn King were found in a canola field.) Probably nothing -- just want to put it out there.

I'm in British Columbia, Ravens Tears ... sleuthing on the Western Canada missing women cases for quite a few years now (not solving any of them yet, but with a major POI in some of the cases .. just no icing on the cake that i need). I concentrate mainly on BC to Saskatchewan, but more and more am starting to look at the cases further east ... all so very sad and OVERWHELMING

Nancy Swenty's remains have been found and confirmed to be her.
No cause of death has been released but the death has been ruled a homicide.

Here is a link to a Manitoba map which shows where the towns of Fisher Branch, Poplarfield and Fraserwood are located. Fisherbranch can be found directly under the heading “Southern InterLake Map".

Fisher Branch and Poplarfield are on Highway #17 and Poplarfield is 20 kilometres south of Fisher Branch. Fraserwood is 80 kilometres SW of Fisher Branch on Highway #7 and that is where Swenty’s pickup truck was found on Sunday, July 31.

Several "items of interest" were found lying in a wet and grassy ditch on a wooded stretch of Highway 17B near Poplarfield on Saturday, Aug 27. Chilled, searchers flagged the find and called police.

The next morning, RCMP search teams discovered a body near the jacket.

Looking at the above link that I bolded ... the man LE wanted to speak with in the disappearance of Sunshine Wood from Winnipeg in 2004 (scroll down to the video cam surveillance pic in the link), looks not unlike RGMcD from Fisher Branch who was initially being sought in connection with Nancy's disappearance (the guy who was headed to BC and who contacted LE and has supposedly been ruled out).

I can't make it out in the surveillance pic .. is anyone able to read the logo on the back of that guy's jacket?

ETA: Correcting myself here ... in reading back over articles that contain reference to RGMcD, I don't see anywhere that LE says he was ruled out ... only that he and Nancy knew each other, he had vanished, he contacted LE shortly after a public appeal was issued, and Nancy was not with him.

I can't make out what is on the back of his jacket either but natives who live on reserves normally wear a jacket with a logo stating their reserve's name on the back.

The public alert the RCMP issued included McDiarmid's name but the report doesn't mention whether RGMcD had to report in person to the nearest detachment. If he had appeared in person, the officers would have a chance to see whether he had any fresh scratches or cuts on his body and check out his vehicle.

The fact the perp drove NS truck south east to Fraserwood after he disposed of her body in Poplarfield doesn't seem to implicate RGMcD who is travelling in his own vehicle. I assume RGMcD is travelling alone.

An autopsy has confirmed that the human remains found near Poplarfield belong to the 33-year-old Fisher Branch woman who went missing more than a month ago. The cause of death is not being released but police are treating it as a homicide. The police refused to say whether NS was sexually attacked.

A massive search of the areas to the south and north of Fisher Branch had been underway since the discovery of Swenty&#8217;s truck. The terrain is a maze of bush trails, shot through with deep ditches and tall grass. There's an abandoned rail bed, and north of Fisher Branch where the roads end, a collection of old hunting cabins. Swenty's truck was found days later near an abandoned farm house.

A celebration of Nancy Swenty's life is scheduled to be held at the Fisher Branch Community Centre on Monday, Sept. 5, at 1 p.m. Her family said everyone is welcome to attend. September 5th is a labor day holiday in Canada.

Swenty lived alone just outside Fisher Branch, about 160 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
The population in Fisher Branch is approximately 400.

FYI, Fisher Branch is a village located in the Rural Municipality of Fisher in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It is located on Highway 17 in the north Interlake region of the province. Fisher Branch was originally named Wasoo, but later was changed to Fisher Branch because it was beside a branch of the Fisher River. The primary industry of Fisher Branch is agriculture.

The police haven&#8217;t released to the public whether they found signs that a struggle occurred inside Nancy&#8217;s home.

A tarp was reportedly found near the body and I wonder if that means the perp wrapped Nancy in the tarp before she was placed in her truck?

Nancy was last seen at her home at 5 pm on Wednesday, July 27th which would have been when she arrived home from work. Her jacket was found close to her body.

Police have refused to comment on the condition of Nancy's home and truck which was found by an abandoned farmhouse.

I wonder how the man travelling out west knew the RCMP wanted to talk to him about Nancy? RCMP said the public alert named him and the man contacted police. Maybe he heard the announcement on the radio? Anyone know?

Arghh ... I lost a long post with links, but basically it was that some initial reports indicated McD and Nancy may have been travelling in her truck. If so, does McD not have his own transportation? If not, how was he planning a road trip to BC?

Does seem a very odd coincidence that in a community of 300 people, two of them vanish at the same time and one turns up dead. The public alert was issued July 30, so where was McD from the 27th until the 30th when people noticed his absence?

McD's FB pic shows him wearing a hoodie with a logo that contains a couple of crossbars that look like crossed hockey sticks. The jacket in the 2004 Sunshine Wood surveillance pic has a logo that, when enlarged, seems to contain a couple of crossbars, but it becomes too distorted when enlarged, so i really can't compare them very well.

The Winnipeg Police Service recently released two photos to the media depicting Sunshine Wood in the company of an unidentified male who was of interest to investigators.

Yesterday, the unidentified male turned himself in at the Winnipeg Police Service Centre on Portage Avenue.

It may be safe to assume that his family and or friends would contact him once he was named in the news.

I know if I was watching the news and or reading the paper and saw that a friend or family member was wanted to questioning in regards to a woman who can't be found, you can bet your buttons I would try to get in contact and let them know that he needs to speak with LE.

I am so sad that another life has been taken from our prairie provinces , I am however grateful that her body has been recovered, there are far too many who haven't been found.

ETA Sillybilly those cross bars you see on the hoodie I believe may be Lacrosse sticks.
