FL - Ex-student Jared Cano held for Tampa 'school bomb plot'
A "potentially catastrophic" bomb plot hatched by an expelled high-school student has been foiled by police in the US city of Tampa, Florida.
Police said Jared Cano, 17, planned to lay a device at Freedom High School in north Tampa and detonate it as students began the new school year.
Fuel, shrapnel, plastic tubing and timing and fusing devices were found at his home, a police chief said.
Jane Castor said the plot was of a scale never before seen in Tampa.
Mr Cano, who had been expelled from the school, was hoping to kill or injure more people than the 1999 shooting by two students at Columbine High School in Colorado, Ms Castor said.
12-09-2015, 03:14 PM #2Investigators say he visited bomb-making websites and downloaded a video game based on the Columbine massacre. He gathered pipes, fertilizer, bags of small metal bits and a soldering iron.
Authorities say he was on his way to making bombs. His defense attorney has proof those materials were not sufficient.
Jared saved a note on his phone:
"My mother hates me. … If only she knew. … If only they all knew. … I'm a lost cause. Destined to teach a lesson with bloodshed. Lessons not learned in blood are soon forgotten. …"
In his dresser drawer, he kept a journal.
In messy, childish scrawl, he wrote ominous plans, the events of April 20, 2011, planned out to the minute.
Wake up. Shower. Get dressed. Smoke. Leave house. Arrive at 6:55 a.m. Place bombs.
He drew diagrams and pictures of bloody bodies. He numbered each step.
5. When bombs blow, advance on courtyard and surrounding areas.
6. Pick off bomb survivors.
12-09-2015, 03:17 PM #3Tampa, Florida -- The New Tampa teen who allegedly planned a Columbine-like attack on Freedom High School will spend 15 years behind bars.
The judge decided Jared Cano, 18, meant what he said about planning to launch a deadly plot on the first day of school last year. Cano's sister, Alexandria, gasped and had to be removed from the courtroom in tears.
Cano had pleaded no contest in the case...
Kill anybody in there. After that, it's just in the parking lot and just shoot anyone there," he said in a self-made video-tape played in court again during the sentencing hearing.
In that chilling, profanity-laced video, Cano himself details the plan: how he would move room to room, leaving a trail of death and mayhem, detonating bombs, shooting administrators and students as they ran for cover.
He defies authority. He tells people not to blame his mom for what he planned to do.
