Three young men accused of killing a 42-year-old father at a mini-golf course as his daughters looked on in horror appeared before a judge on Monday in Barrie, Ont.

Relatives of the victim say that the father was stabbed fatally with a broken golf club during a fight that erupted after he had asked a group of rowdy teens to settle down....

This is my favorite part of the article;

...Calista Spring, sister of two suspects, said "I've known these boys all my life (and) they are not these kinds of people."

There were 30 witness' to the crime yet she believes "they are not these kinds of people." :rolleyes: OBVIOUSLY they are.
 
That happened just up the road from where I live and my Grandkids have been to the mini put several. times.

The victim's father-in-law said that Hubbard was simply trying to enjoy an evening out with his family, but a group of young males was drinking and smashing golf clubs.

"My daughter told them to stop it because the girls were crying, that's how bad they were," said Brian Reid.

He added that with the children upset and Hubbard's wife concerned, the victim was simply trying to stand up for his family. Reid said that the group dismissed the comments rudely.

"They told her to go to hell. And then Bradley stepped up and said ‘not in front of my family.'"

After the violence erupted, Reid said his son-in-law lay on the ground, fatally injured with a neck wound.

"At least he died in his wife's arms," Reid said. "He got to tell her that he loved her before he passed away."

That is just heart wrenching. He said nothing to warrant that level of violence. :(

I am trying to find the age of the daughters. I'm saying lots of prayers for them tonight.
 
I know this absolutely horrifying. I wonder what the maximum penalty in Canada is for something like this.
 
I have worked in the public school system for 30 years, specifically with high risk kids.
[ tutoring kids at 'high risk' of dropping out.]

Until NOW, I have always stuck up for the kids, saying how every generation feels that the current day teens are beyond repair. I stuck up for hippies and the tune in/drop out generation, and the punks, and the stoners, the emos and the indie rockers, the entitled bratz, the jock bullies, the E-generation, the ravers....EVERYONE. ...Until NOW.

Sadly, I have to say that the violent flash mobs, and the London riots, and the cold blooded senseless killings ,such as this, have me really spooked by the current crop of teens. For once, I feel we have created a dangerous and violent generation that cares nothing about bloody violence... shudder...
 
This is one of the saddest things I've read. How awful for that family :sigh:

Two of the three teens charged with second-degree murder following the death of a Collingwood man are being held in protective custody at the Penetanguishene superjail.

Justin Spring, 19, his brother Matthew Spring, 18, of Innisfil, and Jake Workman, 18, made a brief appearance in court, Wednesday. They sat in handcuffs in the prisoner's box.

They are scheduled to be be back in court Aug. 31.

Police say the teens were charged following an altercation that ended up in tragedy after Bradley Hubbard, 42, was killed at the Putting Edge, a glow-in-the-dark golf course in south-end Barrie at around 9:30 p.m., Saturday.

Hubbard, the father of seven children, was playing golf with his girlfriend and his two daughters, aged eight and four, when an altercation occurred.

Witnesses say the suspects were being rowdy and scaring patrons. When they were asked to stop by Hubbard's girlfriend, Stephanie Reid, they allegedly became verbally abusive toward her.

Hubbard, a large man who stood six-foot-four and weighed 280 pounds and was known to associate with members of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang, came to intervene and the incident escalated into a physical altercation.

In cases of murder, the sentence is automatically a life sentence whether that’s first degree murder or second degree murder.
In cases of second degree murder, the judge has the ability to fix the period of parole ineligibility anywhere between 10 and 25 years with recommendations from the jury, if they choose to make them

After two years of having a murder charge hanging over their heads, two Barrie men breathed sighs of relief after they had the charges thrown out of court Tuesday.

An elated Justin Spring, 21, and his friend, Jake Workman, 20, walked out of court as free men after their charges in the death of a Collingwood man during a mini-putt game were dropped.

They were charged, along with Spring’s 20-year-old brother, Matthew, with the second-degree murder of Bradley Hubbard, 42, two years ago.

Hubbard was killed after he was hit with a golf club at the Putting Edge glow-in-the-dark golf course in the south end of Barrie Aug. 13, 2011.

Witnesses told police the three teens were acting rowdy when Hubbard, a large man who stood at six-foot-four, allegedly grabbed one of the men by the throat. An altercation ensued and Hubbard was hit in the throat with a golf club.

Initially, Hubbard got up and walked away from the scene, but died in the lobby a short time later.

In court, the Crown attorney agreed to drop the charges against the two men, saying there is no reasonable prospect of conviction if the case were taken to trial.

As he entered the lobby of the glow-in-the-dark golf course in Barrie, Bradley Hubbard casually stood next to the teen who would cause his death just 20 minutes later, a video revealed in court on Tuesday...

Approximately 20 minutes later, Hubbard returns to the lobby, shirtless, holding his neck as he leans against the counter asking staff to call 911.

"He was weaving and shaking... he was holding his neck and I could see blood spurting through his fingers," floor manager Bradley Hiltz testified. "He said, 'I'm dying, I need an ambulance.'" Within a couple of minutes, Hubbard collapsed and died.
