Police seek assistance in search for missing Jersey City woman, 32; cops say husband has been uncooperative

According to investigators, she's long had a volatile relationship with her husband in the home they shared here on Charles street.

Her husband has claimed to investigators Lehrer left after a fight on Saturday evening, but he didn't report her missing until Wednesday.

Cops say he's lawyered up, and has refused to cooperate as they search for his wife.

"This has been a perplexing case to the investigators you see here, her husband has been what I would consider to be less than cooperative if his spouse and the mother of his child is missing," said Chief Tom Comey.

Police say Lehre is 5'2", 145 lbs with a tattoo on her shoulder that says "laugh now, cry later".

Comey added that Lehrer's husband - whose name he would not provide - has refused to speak to police without an attorney present, and "there are certain parts of the investigation where we had to obtain court orders and warrants. We're still considering it a missing persons case, until we learn

otherwise. We're looking for anybody that can give us information as to her whereabouts. We're concerned at this point for her safety."

Last Friday, Lehrer left the restaurant at about 2 p.m. Witnesses said what unfolded on the sidewalk was frightening.

"Her husband was waiting for her on the corner with their baby. He just left the kid and the stroller here and went chasing after her. I didn't see what happened but he came back, got the baby and left," said Paul Watroba.

Diakos said Lehrer's husband called the restaurant on Monday, saying she went to visit her sick mother in Canada.

But Diakos said Lehrer's sister later told him their mother wasn't sick.

"He lied to me," said Diakos.

"There were times he would scream so loud you could hear it through the doors," said neighbor Paulette Dempsey.

She was last seen wearing a black Ed Hardy t-shirt and has a tattoo on her right shoulder that says “Laugh No Cry Later.”

Comey said there is no sign of foul play, but police have confirmed that the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office’s Homicide Squad assisted in the search of the family’s home.

The chief said the New Jersey State Police have joined the search and he asked anyone with information on Lehrer’s whereabouts to contact the police.

The chief said the police department is working on getting access to Lehrer’s cell phone, but the task has been complicated.

The search for Lehrer has included interviews from California to Canada, where Lehrer was born, Comey said. The husband reported her missing at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and said she left after an argument.

This looks very, very bad :(

Husband's name given in this article as Steven Acuna.

Police have searched the couple’s home on Charles Street. Where neighbors often heard them fighting.

“They would argue a lot and I remember actually seeing her last week, and she kicked him out, she told him don’t ever come back I don’t want to see you,” said neighbor Janaya Henry.

“We are very concerned for her safety,” Comey said.

Police have found no evidence of foul play but fear that may be the case.

I don't know what in the world is going on with this case. I'm so worried about this woman, and also about her baby.

This comes on my local news, but there was nothing on Saturday, nothing on Sunday, and nothing on Monday. Now I just checked again, and still nothing. :(

I am so weary of these cases where the "significant other" (husband, boyfriend, lover, wife, girlfriend or ex-any of the above) is the obvious perp in the case and he/she will NOT cooperate with LE. HE/SHE will not SPEAK to them, HELP them or SEARCH for the missing so-called loved one. And the LE dept cannot force them to do anything. It is so da*n frustrating.

Everyone knows he did SOMETHING but what, and where is she are the questions needing answers. And unfortunately there is a child involved in this case who will suffer the most as a result.

Randy where are you ?

Jersey City residents in The Heights to help in search for missing mom

Police Chief Tom Comey said there is no sign of foul play, but police have confirmed that the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office’s Homicide Squad assisted in the search of the family’s home. Comey said Lehrer has not missed a day of work in three years except around the time she gave birth.

Residents who want to assist are asked to meet at the North District precinct tomorrow at 7 p.m.

Lehrer's cousin, Jessica Shirin tells CJAD that it's out of character for Randy not to call or tell anyone where she's going. She's suspicious about the husband. Especially after her cousin's visit to her Montreal-area home in July.

She said Randy was pacing, nervous and crying a lot. She admitted that her husband was verbally and physically abusive.

Shirin spent six days with her cousin in Montreal in late July.

She says Lehrer told her how she feared her husband.

"She told me about the physical and verbal abuse she endured,” she said.

The couple was married last year and have a 10-month-old baby girl.

Police in New Jersey say the husband, Steven Acuna, has not been cooperating with search efforts.

At a news conference last week, they told reporters Acuna only reported Lehrer missing on August 15, three days after her disappearance.

What's especially strange, say police, is that on August 14, Acuna called her employer to tell them she quit her job so she could care for her sick mother in Montreal.

The mother is reportedly in good health.
