Charinez Jefferson was seven-months pregnant when she was shot and killed.

Chicago - An alleged gang member charged with

fatally shooting a seven-month pregnant teenager
ignored her pleas and called her a “*****” before gunning her down in Marquette Park last week, Cook County prosecutors said.

Timothy Jones, 18, was ordered held without bail Monday for the Aug. 16 murder of Charinez Jefferson.

Jefferson, 17, was shot in the head, buttocks and chest while she was walking back from the store with a member of Jones’ rival gang, prosecutors said.

Jones’ adversary fled the scene when Jones exited a vehicle and started firing at him and Jefferson in the 3000 block of West 64th Street, Assistant State’s Attorney John Dillon said.

Jefferson, fending for herself, begged Jones not to shoot and told him she was pregnant, Dillon said.

But Jones allegedly opened fire and called her a “*****.” After shooting her numerous times, Jones continued to shoot her as she lay defenseless on the ground, Dillon said.

Jones then got back into the car he arrived in and fled the scene. He was later arrested at his home, in the 6300 block of South Rockwell Street and was identified by witnesses as the person who shot and killed Jefferson.

Jefferson’s baby, a boy, was delivered by doctors and survived the attack.

Jefferson’s family refused comment following Monday’s bond hearing.

However, Jones’ cousin Stanley Jones, contended police arrested the wrong man. Stanley Jones said his cousin was recuperating from a recent gunshot wound to his leg. He denied Timothy Jones was in a gang.

“I’m positive they have the wrong man,” Stanley Jones said.

“He barely can walk. He just got shot.”

Timothy Jones was currently on probation for a 2010 burglary conviction.

He also has a lengthy juvenile background, according to the state’s attorney’s office.

He was found delinquent for a burglary in 2009 and for a possession of a stolen motor vehicle in 2008.

Eight months pregnant, Charinez Jefferson's stroll with a friend to a corner store in the Marquette Park neighborhood ended when a gang member shot her eight times at point-blank range in spite of her pleas for mercy. Doctors managed to save her baby, but he was left severely brain damaged.

Chicago police detectives arrested Timothy Jones in the teen's 2011 killing, alleging he was out for blood after being shot in the thigh earlier that same day. He turned on Jefferson, 17, after her friend — a rival gang member and the intended target — ran away, witnesses testified this week...

Jurors deliberated for about four hours Thursday before convicting Jones of Jefferson's murder. Prosecutors said Jones now faces a sentence of nearly 50 years to life in prison.

What took so long for sentencing?

Timothy Jones, 23, was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Charinez Jefferson, who was walking with a friend to a Marquette Park corner store when Jones shot her eight times at point-blank range as she begged for her life.

Doctors saved her baby, delivered by emergency surgery after the shooting in August 2011, though his condition is unlikely to improve.

"You took her life, you left her baby clinging to life and to this day he is attached to a ventilator that breathes for him," Jefferson's aunt Betty Lee said in court Monday before Jones was sentenced.
