Australia - Sydney: Man who claims to have bomb holds girl hostage
After dropping my kids off this morning, I noticed helicopters hovering nearby where all of the court houses are.
This is what it was all about. It has been going on for 10 hrs now, with no sign of it ending soon.
I was there watching it unfold for most of the day. They sent in (what I assume were) bomb squad dogs around 4 hrs after the seige began.
Praying that it ends with the man getting the help he needs and the little girl recovering unharmed from such a traumatic event.
•'Device in bag' threat
•Number of demands made
•Daughter 'as well as she can be'
•Thumbs down over lawyer's wig
The police operation to bring an end to a siege at barristers' chambers in the heart of Parramatta is "very delicate and dangerous", Assistant Commissioner Denis Clifford said this afternoon in a second briefing to media.
Earlier this afternoon the man at the centre of the siege at 11 George Street had been heard to scream and smash an office window more than four hours after bursting into the office with his daughter, demanding to speak to someone and saying he had a bomb.
Mr Clifford said police were ''very concerned'' about the man's comments that he had a ''device in the bag''.
''Until we have possession of the backpack we will remain very concerned about it.''

I know people will think I'm a bleeding heart, but I actually feel bad for the guy. Even his daughter seemed more worried about them hurting her dad when she was released, so I think (and hope) at least she knew he wasn't going to hurt anyone.
He obviously tried to go about things the right way when he met with the greens MP the day before and was fobbed off.
It seems to have been edited from the vids now, but when I first saw it on TV the greens MP told him he couldn't help him, and he'd have to take his isues to a private attorney.
He didn't smash the window out of violence. The police say it was because the air con wasn't woking in there, and the windows don't open.
Watching the video of him, he's clearly saying "I'm not dangerous. I'm ok. But they system is screwed, and legal documents mean nothing when you're wearing a magistrates wig."
I already have a couple of theories after doing some hunting online last night. The key is in the fact that he met with Jerry Buckingham (greens MP) on Monday and when he went into the magistrates chambers Tuesday he wanted to contact the attorney general to pass on information.
I think it's somehow linked to this:
Mining will create wastelands
NSW Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham said people felt disempowered and were "taking whatever action is necessary so they have their voices heard".

He's due in court today, so I'm going to try to go and see if they let me in, bceuase I have a feeling that they won't be advertising what his concerns were that led to this desperate act.
ETA: It's also interesting to note that when the seige finally ended the police said the man was 'assisting them with their inquiries'.

But it seems I was on the right track about the daughters mindset.
Siege girl 'screamed to stay with her dad'
Police allege he made threes demand during the siege, including $4500 from an Aboriginal Land Council, access to lawyer Brian Hancock and legal action to be taken against another man, Matthew Turner.
The case has been adjourned to September 15.
