Did bullying push teen to suicide?

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - Did bullying provoke the weekend suicide of a Williamsville North student? It's a powerfully emotional story, and the parents of a boy who left his own heartrending message behind are speaking about the tragedy.

Please be aware: the story that follows is disturbing and discretion is advised.

Jamey Rodemeyer needed help. At 14, he was grappling with adolescent demons that could torment grown men.

And when he was online, he wrote about it.

"I always say how bullied I am, but no one listens," he wrote Sept. 9. "What do I have to do so people will listen to me?"

When Phil Chearmonte heard about the death of Williamsville North High School freshman Jamey Rodemeyer, he was crushed.

He and his wife, Linda, had walked this same road early last year. Their son was also a suicide victim and a student at Williamsville North.

"I was devastated," he said. "My first reaction was, 'Oh, my God. How could this happen when I know for a fact that there's so much [suicide prevention] information available at North specifically? It baffles me. Then, I guess my next reaction was, 'Wow. How does this impact what we're doing? Are we doing the right thing?'"

It so sad to see such lovely young people gone forever.

Please tell if if I'm off, but exactly how much help are all the stories in the news about bullying doing? I hear stories about bullying almost everyday. There are stories of support, stories of courage, stories that you are not alone. Celebrities openly support kids who are being bullied, yet, the suicides continue. How much more can we do? What will make a difference?

For starters, things have to be taught at home. Parents/caregivers have to instill VALUES into the kids they are raising and keep tabs on what they are doing and who they are doing it with. Kids are watching way too much "put down" humor in the media.

    It's national news now.

I noticed that Megan Meier and Phoebe Prince have put bullying in the forefront. Also criminal charges are pending against 3 bullies. Perhaps, they will become most hated.

Without a doubt! Its too accepted but when you're on the receiving end and you don't think its funny its like a never ending nightmare. its prevalent.

Thank God for this. What has to happen is people NEED to be brought up on charges for relentless bullying. Even if its a fine to the parents!
It's just MOO. I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time and it surely won't be the last!

The anti-bullying policies at Williamsville and other suburban Buffalo school districts don't go far enough, national bullying experts said Thursday, four days after the suicide of 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer of Amherst.

I posted a separate thread for the article about Lady gaga wanting to meet with President Obama to discuss bullying. I really hope this can happen.

You know, I'm usually an "everyone is entitled to their opinion" sort of person. But not now. This is what intolerance breeds. No child is born with a hatred for gay people, they are taught this by adults and society.

    Shameful.

Jamey Rodemeyer and his older sister, Alyssa, were more than good kids. They were smart and independent kids.

Shortly before Jamey died, his mother, Tracy, recalled thinking to herself that she was lucky to have children who could take care of themselves.

"If anything ever happened to me," she recalled thinking, "they'll be OK."

A week after Jamey's suicide, she and her husband, Timothy, wonder how they could have been so wrong about everything.
