OH - James 'Jim' Donofrio, 64, Youngstown, 25 Sept 2011

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Family members of a local tavern owner are trying to find their loved one who has been missing since Sunday night.

James Donofrio, the owner of Avalon Gardens, was last seen leaving his home to go close the Belmont Avenue restaurant Sunday night at 9:00 p.m.

Family members say their loved one, who also goes by Jim, never actually made it to the business and never came home.

Donofrio's brother, Ron, said, "He has a son graduating from high school this year. He wouldn't just run off."

One piece of the mystery was found; Donofrio's white Landrover. Early Monday morning, police found the vehicle alongside the railroad tracks under the Market Street bridge and on top of a section of a telephone pole.

"All of his possessions; his cell phone, his wallet, the keys to the vehicle, were in the vehicle," Donofrio said. So family members and police started searching the area along the Mahoning River with no success.

They are especially concerned, because 64-year-old Donofrio has a previous head injury and a heart problem. "He's somewhere. We're just trying to find him. If anyone can help, please help us," Donofrio said.

Youngstown police officials are in the Mahoning River this afternoon looking for James Donofrio, 64, owner of the Avalon Gardens bar and restaurant on Belmont Avenue.

Activity is centered under the Market Street bridge. Cadaver dogs are also being used.

Boardman police took the missing persons report on Donorfio at 9:41 p.m. Monday at Donofrio’s residence.

Police said relatives told officers that Donofrio left his Boardman home to go close the bar at about 9 p.m. Sunday. His wife realized he was not home at 5:30 a.m. Monday, reports state.

About 7:20 a.m. Youngstown police discovered Donofrio’s Land Rover abandoned under the Market Street bridge near the Covelli Center. A search by Youngstown officers and police dogs did not find anything else, according to records.

Ironically, Donofrio was profiled over the weekend in a local paper. He has owned the Avalon Gardens since January.

Donofrio's brother said the last anyone heard from the businessman was Sunday night as he was on his way to the restaurant.

"He called the restaurant to have them make him some dinner because he was working all day on the computer, and he was tired," said Ronnie Donofrio. "His wife had been working there in the day. She had the day shift. He was going back at night to close."

Only Donofrio never arrived at the Avalon and never returned home again either.

"It's just like one of those things where you disappear. It's like he just vanished from this space here," Ronnie Donofrio said.

Relatives said when his SUV was discovered, his possessions, including the keys, credit cards and cell phone, were all still in the vehicle.

What has relatives and police puzzled is that Jim Donofrio reportedly used his cell phone to make a number of calls just after midnight Monday from the very spot where his vehicle was found.

"The police have tri-angulated that for us. They know that he was here at 1 o'clock in the morning making phone calls. Well his phone was," Ronnie Donofrio said.

One of his last calls was to the VM of an old friend, who he'd known since high school.

James’ last phone call was made at 1:24 a.m. Monday to a long-time friend and the message said “This is James Donofrio returning your call,” according to records.
According to his friend, he found it strange he spoke so formally instead of leaving a casual message.

That is strange. First, who returns phone calls at 1am? Odd. Second..by speaking so formally, it almost sounds like he wanted his friend to know for certain it was him calling, almost as if he was in danger.

Foley said a missing-person report was taken at 7:30 a.m. Monday when Youngstown police also filed a report about Donofrio’s towed car.

“I wish more was done [Monday], but I don’t know if we had if we would have solved this riddle by now,” Foley said.

Foley said there was some confusion in communicating with the Donofrio family.

Rosanne said she was told to wait 24 hours before filing a missing-person report and to contact Boardman police because that is where the couple resides. Boardman police took a missing-person report about 9:30 p.m. Monday at Donofrio’s township residence, and Boardman Police Chief Jack Nichols said his department is assisting Youngstown.

Foley said internal affairs is going to review dispatch audio to check that individuals in the police department acted properly.

Rosanne said family and friends have been searching for her husband since Monday morning.

I wonder what the sale issue were? Also it sounds like the friend is not sure about it being James voice on the message.

    (snip)
The couple purchased the Avalon Gardens at the end of January, and it was their first foray into the restaurant business.
“A lot of issues that were supposed to be handled before the sale weren’t,” she said. “... Sometimes you take the stress so long, and then you melt down. He isn’t one to melt down. ... My concern is on the side of maybe he just collapsed somewhere.”
Rosanne said her husband’s disappearance is baffling.
