    Maple Batalia

    http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Crime/20.../18755311.html
“She is no longer in the world. Some wicked person has taken her,” said a devastated Harkirat Batalia, a day after his daughter’s murder.

Maple Batalia, 19, a model and actor, was found suffering from from gunshot wounds near the Simon Fraser University (SFU) campus in Surrey, B.C., around 1 a.m.

Batalia was found by SFU students in the third-floor parking lot of the Central City Shopping Centre, adjacent to the SFU building.

She was clinging to life when police arrived, but died shortly after arriving at hospital.

“We’re sensitive to the nerve that has been touched in this community,” Sgt. Peter Thiessen said. “Now we’re trying to determine who would want to kill this young lady.”

She was an actress with a role in a major Hollywood film already under her belt and a TV appearance yet to air. But there was much more to Maple Batalia than just on-screen beauty – the 19-year-old university student often crammed late into the night and dreamed of becoming a doctor.

To those who knew her, it was clear the young woman was destined for big things. But Ms. Batalia’s loved ones are struggling to come to grips with the news that her promising life has been cut short.

“I lost everything I had. My precious jewel is no more,” Batalia said of Maple, an aspiring actress and model.

He said Maple never spoke a harsh word about anyone, but was having some trouble with a former boyfriend.

And he said he thinks her early morning execution “was out of hatred and vengeance.”

Batalia, a retired heavy-duty mechanic, said Maple broke up with the young man because she “might have learned of bad deeds, dirty money coming in.”

From the first article, the dad thinks the killer was a former friend who was moving too fast and the daughter broke it off. He probably is right.

Batalia chose his daughter’s unusual first name after spending some time in the U.S. during autumn, when the leaves were falling.

“I loved the leaf. I looked at all the pretty trees when all the leaves start shedding and the colours start changing,” he recalled. “It was the time when she was born.”

When the nurse asked what name he wanted to put on her birth certificate, he and wife Sarbjit agreed: “Maple.”

Harry Batalia said he and his wife Sarbjit felt blessed by God to have a daughter like Maple.

“She always looked at Maple’s face and said ‘I wish every home had this kind of child’. She always prayed ‘Oh God, please give everybody a gift like this,’” he said.

I don’t know if I will believe in God anymore.”

"SURREY, B.C. - Police in Surrey, B.C, say 40 to 50 officers are trying to figure out who gunned down a 19-year-old model, actor and student".

"RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen says police don't know if Batalia knew her attacker so they can't say whether or not the homicide was targeted.

Thiessen says police have been speaking to a variety of individuals and persons of interest".

I hope they catch the' son of a gun' who stole the light and love of this family.

"The weeping mother of murder victim Maple Batalia urged everyone in the community to help police find the person behind her daughter's death.

Sarbjit Batalia told The Vancouver Sun Thursday that Maple "was a really special girl" whom other families appreciated as much as her own.

"She could have done so many things for society," Batalia said.

"I need help to find out who did this to her."

Batalia said her older daughter is organizing a candlelight vigil tonight at 7 p.m. in Surrey's Holland Park for Maple, a popular 19-year-old Simon Fraser University student who was gunned down about 1: 10 a.m. Wednesday."

"She was an outstanding student, a pillar in her community. She was a beautiful young lady in the prime of her life and this is not a result of any questionable lifestyle on her part."

While police have a good idea of how many shots were fired in the killing, they are not releasing those details or any other evidence they may have collected, he added.

Batalia used modelling and acting to help pay for her education and once had a small role in the movie "Diary of a Wimpy Kid."

Harkirat Batalia said his daughter was the youngest of three children and dreamed of becoming a doctor. She was born near Mumbai, India, and was only six-months-old when the family moved to Canada.

"I've lost everything I had," he said. "My life source is gone. I wished I was dead many years back so that I didn't have to see this day. I cannot explain in any terms how to live now."

Harkirat Batalia, Maple's father, said he believes the main suspect is an old schoolmate.

The family said Maple will be cremated, after which they will hold a prayer service at a Sikh temple where a priest will recite passages from a holy book and pray for her soul.

My deepest sympathies to the family, friends, teachers, classmates and parents of those classmates, this ugly violence affects everyone in society one way or another. This lovely young lady, obviously had very special gifts and talents to offer this world...sigh.

Batalia didn't mention to her modeling friends that she was having trouble with a former boyfriend, Chundunsing said.

But her friends were aware that someone had hacked Batalia's facebook page, forcing Batalia to shut it down for several months.

She had only recently set up again at the urging of her friends, Chundunsing said.

Life was almost back to normal at SFU's Surrey campus Thursday, though university spokesman Don MacLachlan said he thought students were still "subdued."

Didn't the other article imply that her parents were in America at the time of her birth, hence the name "Maple"?

    <snipped>

When Maple Batalia was born 19 years ago near Mumbai, her family says “it was the best gift we ever got in our lives.”

“At that stage, we never knew we were going to be immigrants for Canada,” he said.

Batalia said he thought Canada would provide amazing opportunities for his family. Maple had a lifetime of opportunities before her — she had just been named a finalist in the Central City Model Search and played a small role in the feature film, Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Hundreds of mourners gathered at Surrey's Holland Park on Friday to remember slain student Maple Batalia.

They wept, they carried candles and they demanded justice for the 19-year-old Simon Fraser University student, who was gunned down early Wednesday morning in a parkade beside the school's Surrey campus.

No one wept harder than her father Harry Batalia, 66, who could barely speak to reporters.

"Most of the community and the human beings by now have learned of my angel," Batalia said, choking back tears. "My angel was a rising star of Canada with so many ambitions."

Because of the tragic events, Central City has decided to postpone the event indefinitely".

Good thinking! Knowing what happened to Nancy Kerrigan, the former figure skater, it is very possible someone was jealous of Maple's beauty and wanted to eliminate her from the upcoming contest.

Maple was gunned down early Wednesday morning in a parkade beside the school's Surrey campus and because her father believes a former boyfriend may be responsible for her slaying, her ex-boyfriend would naturally be a main suspect in this case. He lives in the area and since he hasn’t been arrested, maybe he wasn't the person who murdered Maple.

Maple's father said his daughter had an altercation with the man at a Tim Horton's a few days before she was gunned down but Batalia didn't mention to her modeling friends that she was having trouble with a former boyfriend Chundunsing said.

Is it possible for LE to find the person who hacked into Maple's FB page?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The list of of women who've met violent deaths in the Lower Mainland keeps getting longer.

"Maple Batalia is the latest woman to be killed in recent months.

While no one has been charged in the shooting death of Maple Batalia at SFU's Surrey campus on Wednesday, an expert says schools and workplaces are the number one areas where women are stalked."

"If it is the situation and she has broken up with this guy or has left the relationship, she can let her neighbours know that if they see his car they should call police," Porteous says. "And coworkers should know that if he comes around that they should phone police."

Because Maple was killed with a gun, the bullets lodged in her body will allow the police to identify the type of gun the killer used and hopefully who owned it. It would be great if someone could find the gun, but the bullets are definitely an asset in the search for her killer.

After viewing the crime scene, the police should be able to determine whether in their opinion the shooter was a professional or amateur.

I think Porteous should have advised women that if they feel it is necessary they should file for a restraining order immediately after they separate from their partner. A protection order warns the ex-partner that if they go anywhere near this person, they will be punished by law.

    Body found near Squamish

Police believe the victim was targeted

    News1130 StaffOct 02, 2011 19:26:21 PM

SQUAMISH (NEWS1130) - A man's body has been discovered near Squamish a few kilometres off Highway 99.

Sergeant Jennifer Pound with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says the body was found by a group of hikers on the MacMillan Bloedel forest service road just after 2:00pm Sunday.

She believes there is no danger to the public. "At this point it appears it may be targeted but it is still early in the investigations so we are just going to let the investigators do their jobs." She would not confirm reports the man was beaten and duct-taped.

Ex-boyfriend of murdered woman turns self in to police

    http://www.calgaryherald.com/boyfrie...905/story.html

VANCOUVER — Almost a week after Simon Fraser University student Maple Batalia's murder, an ex-boyfriend is expected to be charged with assaulting her and another person on Sept. 24.

Gurjinder "Gary" Dhaliwal might appear briefly in B.C. Provincial Court in Surrey Monday afternoon.

A warrant was issued Sept. 29 for Dhaliwal's arrest in connection with the assaults, and he turned himself in to police Monday morning.

It seems the father was correct. May this dear young woman rest in peace. I hope the parents will find some relief if justice is served. I can not imagine the pain they must be feeling.

Father hopes 'good lead' will help find daughter's killer
"The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is in charge of the case. Earlier, Cpl. Annie Linteau said they could not comment on "rumours" that were circulating, including that Maple had been having problems with Dhaliwal.

Dhaliwal has no criminal record but several alleged driving infractions, including two that are still before the courts.

Batalia said he is learning more from his daughters' friends about what had been going on in the weeks before Maple was shot to death, including information that she was being followed and chased at times. But he doesn't want to say anything publicly that might interfere with the ongoing murder investigation."

The former boyfriend of slain teen Maple Batalia has been arrested for allegedly phoning in threats to a local high school.

Gurjinder (Gary) Dhaliwal, 19, was arrested by RCMP on Wednesday, after Fleetwood Park Secondary School received what it preceived as a threat.

Police would not confirm the man arrested was Dhaliwal, but CTV News is citing sources who say it was.

Because of who was making the threat, police say the school felt it was necessary to call police and put the school in lockdown mode.
