The person in question has strongly denied to police that they were involved with McLeod’s disappearance. But Guest said police are not buying the denials due to what they believe are inconsistencies in the person’s story.

“The victim told so many people that if something happens to me this person did it,” said Guest. “We have a person of interest. We just don’t have a body.”

Investigators believe someone abducted Shawndell McLeod, 35, as she left for work.

Detectives said on a Sunday in September 2011, McLeod was supposed to leave her home she formerly shared with another woman in the 4700 block of Golod Way to go to her job as a nursing home cook.

“I believe she was abducted outside her house when she came out to go to work around 5 in the morning,” detective Henry Guest said. “It was more than one person because I don’t believe one person could have taken her and then taken the car, too.”

Guest said McLeaod’s car, a 2011 Nissan Versa, turned up days later near Cleveland Avenue behind an abandoned house. That led police to a person of interest, but Guest doesn’t believe that person is the killer.

Detectives said they have a prime suspect, somebody who was close enough to know McLeod’s family and know how to get through the maze of streets to get to her house.

Police need help with 7-year-old cold case

DeKalb County Police are looking for leads in a 7-year-old missing person’s cold case investigation.
Police said 35-year-old Shawndell McLeod left for work back in September 2011 but was never seen again. Detectives believe she is dead although they've never found her body.

Pelzer led police on a high-speed chase down I-75 and was shot by officers. She survived her injuries. Pelzer admitted to police she helped kill McLeod, but blamed Lewis for orchestrating the murder. She told detectives that they buried McLeod on Arabia Mountain, but her body was never recovered.

Pelzer pled guilty to killing Lewis in 2021 and was already serving a life sentence. She will now serve life without the possibility of parole for McLeod’s death

The Gist: Joyce Marie Pelzer was convicted by a DeKalb County jury for the 2011 Malice Murder and Felony Murder of Shawndell McLeod, in a case that remained unresolved until significant developments in 2018.

The Details: Shawndell McLeod was reported missing in September 2011, leading to an investigation that soon focused on her former girlfriend, Joyce Pelzer. Pelzer had a history of threatening McLeod. In 2018, a breakthrough occurred when Pelzer’s then-girlfriend disclosed Pelzer’s admission of the murder. She also revealed Pelzer’s coordinated plan with her wife, Rosalyn Lewis, and an alleged hitman, to kidnap and kill McLeod. Additionally, Pelzer was connected to the 2018 stabbing death of Lewis

After Pelzer and McLeod broke up, Pelzer married Rosalyn Lewis, who filed for divorce by December 2018, officials said.

A detective reached out to Pelzer’s new girlfriend that August. She told investigators Pelzer described a “rocky” relationship with McLeod and conspired with Lewis for months to kill McLeod in 2011, according to the district attorney.

Pelzer said Lewis hired a hitman to kill McLeod, officials said.

“Defendant Pelzer, along with Lewis and the alleged hitman kidnapped McLeod as she arrived to work and held her captive for a few days while they dug a hole for her body,” the district attorney said in the release.

In December 2018, months after first speaking with investigators, Pelzer’s new girlfriend reached out to police “to warn them Pelzer planned to kill her wife,” according to the district attorney.

A few days later, police found Lewis in a motel room with more than 30 stab wounds, prosecutors said.

Before she died at a hospital, she told police Pelzer had stabbed her, officials said.
