NC - Nine E. coli cases confirmed; Eight of those ill attended State Fair

"Seven children and two adults have been infected with E. coli and eight of them attended the North Carolina State Fair, Sue Lynn Ledford, community health director for Wake County, said Wednesday. The victims range in age from two months to 62 years old.

The cause of their illness is not yet known, and Ledford emphasized that a visit to the fair is just one shared characteristic among those that got ill.

Ledford said it could take several days to pinpoint the source of the outbreak."

Well the two month old baby certainly didn't eat anything! I'd look at the water sources near the animal pens. Did they rinse a binky?

You're right, it doesn't have to be from eating food. The NC State Fair had another E. coli outbreak in 2004 which was traced back to a petting zoo. Since then the fairs have had hand sanitizer dispensers at the petting zoos.

"Public health officials said Thursday afternoon that 12 more people might have been sickened by E. coli in a growing outbreak of the illness."

"Half of the suspected cases are in Sampson County, where one child is hospitalized, officials said. Four other suspected cases are in Wake County, while Durham County and Franklin County have one each. Results of lab tests to confirm whether E. coli caused their illnesses won't be back until next week, said State Epidemiologist Dr. Megan Davies."

"State health officials on Saturday adjusted numbers in an E. coli outbreak that has been unofficially linked to the North Carolina State Fair. Eight cases are confirmed E. coli infections and another 17 cases are still being investigated, according to the N.C. Division of Public Health."

Does E.coli pass through breast milk? Maybe mom was nursing the 2 month old and that's how the baby got it?

Right off the top of my head I can't see how e coli would get in the breast milk itself (within the body). Certainly if the Mother touched her own breast or child's mouth without having washed hands it might be possible.

But then again I didn't google it.
