Jhessye Shockley

Endangered Missing from Glendale, Arizona since October 11, 2011

Age: 5 -- Height: 3'5" -- Weight: 55 lbs -- Hair Color: Black -- Eye Color: Brown

Jhessye's mother, Jerice Yaton Hunter, reported Jhessye missing from their home in Glendale, Arizona on October 11, 2011. She stated that Jhessye was home with her 3 older siblings when she wandered away. Around that same time, a woman was seen putting a young girl into a car. An AMBER Alert was issued and an extensive search of the area was performed, with no sign of Jhessye.

Hunter has a history of child abuse. At the time of the abuse charges, she was married to George Edward Shockley, a convicted sex offender who became Jhessye's father. He is still in prison and the couple is now divorced. In the aftermath of Jhessye's disappearance, her siblings were taken into protective custody.

Six weeks after Jhessye disappeared, Hunter was arrested for felony child abuse. Police said Jhessye was the victim, and they believed she had been murdered. Her teen sister said Jhessye had been kept starving in a closet for several weeks, and soon, the closet began to smell "like dead people". Hunter had also purchased bleach two days before Jhessye's disappearance was reported. Hunter was later released because police did not want to face a double-jeopardy situation in case homicide charges were filed later on.

In December 2011, authorities searched Butterfield Station Landfill for Jhessye's remains, saying they had substantial evidence that her body had been placed in a trash bin in Tempe, Arizona and taken from there to the landfill. The search turned up no evidence.

Jhessye remains missing and her mother has not been charged with anything related to her disappearance. Although Hunter maintains her innocence, authorities believe Jhessye was not abducted, but was killed days or weeks prior to her disappearance being reported.
