It was a bizarre discovery for a family camping near Lake Wimico in Gulf County Sunday morning. They discovered three human femur bones in the waters edge.
The family called authorities to report the findings around 10:00am. The Sheriff's Office and Florida Fish and Wildlife officers went to the scene and found 30 to 40 additional bones. The Medical Examiner's Office confirmed they are human remains. Authorities have no idea how long the bones have been there but they were completely skeletonized so they believe it's been years

Investigators say preliminary reports indicate the human remains could be anywhere from 10-to-50 years old.


Is there any more information yet on these remains found?

The Sheriff says he doesn't suspect foul play and that the bones could be from a Native American burial site. An anthropologist is expected to examine the bones tomorrow.


I don't see how he can make that determination that soon.

When I saw Port St. Joe (near Lake Wimico) mentioned in a different story on the same topic, I thought of that Polaroid photo of the two kids who were bound and gagged. IIRC, that photo was found in Port St. Joe.

This sounds strange. The authorities are insisting that the remains are likely to be historical, but the video at the link below indicates that the people who found the remains found a pair of pants with a belt, and a leg bone fell out.

They then go on to discuss all of the 1850's artifacts (a meerschaum Pipe, late 1850's era coins, broken pottery) that were found nearby.

If clothing was found (which would have presumably been made of cotton or wool), and it was found in water, I seriously doubt that it have lasted 150 years. Who's to say that the artifacts were related to the remains? ... Or who's to say that the victim was not a collector of artifacts who died while out looking for artifacts?

Also, in the comments below the video, the person who found the remains is saying that the press has it wrong as to what items were found with the remains:

Channel 7, we were the family who found the remains. First we were not camping, you do not camp at Wimico. We also found more than what you r reporting. The items that were found with the bodies were not what you have reported!

That doesn't surprise me at all. The press has gotten very sloppy in the past few years.

Bones and artifacts found Nov. 13 along the waterline at Lake Wimico have been identified as coming from a documented archaeological site.

The site, known as GC55, meaning the 55th such found in Gulf County, has been researched before, but its origins remain something of a mystery.
