Looking for answers in 2013

Each family is hopeful 2013 will be the year they get the answers they're so desperately seeking.

Another year passes and the whereabouts of Luc Joly-Durocher, Daniel Trask, Robbie Aho, Glen Wesley and Melanie Ethier remain unknown.

[snip]

Celine Ethier has waited more than 16 years to hear what happened to her teenage daughter.

Melanie Ethier disappeared about 2 a.m. on Sept. 29, 1996. The 15-year-old was walking home from a friend's place in New Liskeard when she went missing. That was the last time anyone saw her.

Ethier's case, and about 400 others, remain open files in the Missing Persons-Unidentified Bodies Unit of the Ontario Provincial Police.

There is a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for the Melanie's disappearance.

snipped...The case of Melanie Ethier is another one that's baffled officers. At 2 a.m. on Sept. 29, 1996, Ethier left her friend's place to walk less a kilometre to her house in New Liskeard. She never made it home, and the New Liskeard Police Service and Ontario Provincial Police have yet to find a trace of her. There's no evidence she left New Liskeard voluntarily, and the investigation to date indicates she was murdered.

A Facebook group dedicated to Ethier, Let's Work Together to Find Melanie Ethier, has more than 2,000 members. Her mom, Celine Ethier, keeps the page updated, still hoping to find out what happened to her beloved daughter.

Aho using experience to help others

On Sept. 19, it will be 17 years since Melanie Ethier disappeared while walking home from a friend’s place in New Liskeard.

In October, it will be four years since Robbie Aho went missing in Marten River.

Luc Joly-Durocher has been missing for more than two years after leaving a bar in North Bay.

Their names and pictures were among more than 100 on display at an exhibit Sunday morning at the Land O’ Lakes camp here as Terry Aho – Robbie’s father – announced the formation of an organization he hopes will help the families of the missing while searching for those who have disappeared.

'I just want my daughter's body back'

"Ethier has spent years pleading with the public to provide any information about the whereabouts of her daughter.

She's created social media pages and a billboard with Melanie's picture remains posted along Highway 11 North.

Ethier said she has received plenty of tips from the public and from inside institutions like jails.

Some of the tips have been heart-wrenching.

“I've been told every scenario. I've been told Melanie was put through a wood chipper. I've had tips that she was murdered and the person who did it has died. I've been told to check places where she could be and it leads to a dead-end,” Ethier said.

“I receive messages in the middle of the night from people who say they know where my daughter is and then I've had other people say I will never find her. Unless someone comes forward I believe there is a small chance (I will find her). I just keep trying to push as much as I can. I want to find her. I need to find her.”

Melanie would have been 34 years old."

Watching the video of Melanie, my heart went out to her family and friends for losing such a beautiful and vibrant young lady, she was into everything, from dancing to sports!!
How on earth did Melanie, simply disappear after a routine visit to a nearby friend's home, in a small town?
How come no one knows what happened to her, this is an outrage!
Melanie's mom says she feels her daughter was deceased after a couple of days absence, that is a sad, sad state of affairs, imo. perhaps if it was a big city, one would wonder if she was stolen for the purpose of sexual trafficking...

There must be something missed along the way, perhaps a note in her schoolbooks, a friend of a friend, of a friend- who may have harboured ill will towards her, or a rejected and angry male?

Wondering if Melanie traveled much before her disappearance, attended camp, ect. or if anything new/different, occurred in her life before she went missing?

Celine Ethier's daughter, Melanie, disappeared 20 years ago - September

http://www.nugget.ca/2016/09/30/celine-ethiers-daughter-melanie-disappeared-20-years-ago

Over the past two decades, Celine Ethier says she's heard every scenario possible of what might have happened to her 15-year-old daughter.

But Melanie's body has not been found.

“I really don't know how someone can live with themselves,” Ethier said in a telephone interview Thursday.

“How can you live with no remorse for 20 years? It's just not human. Someone was responsible for her not making it home that night. Every time I post a picture of Melanie on social media, I am trying to reach that one person who will tell me where my daughter is.”

Ethier says she's kept a box of her daughter's favourite things.

“Every anniversary I go back in the bin and hold her souvenirs like her sweatshirt and pictures. I've even kept the baby shower cards I received when I was expecting Melanie.”

Ethier said she will mark the anniversary of her daughter's disappearance surrounded by family.

“As long as I'm living I will hope for closure,” she says.

Celine Ethier understands the feeling of living without answers. Her daughter Melanie went missing in 1996 from New Liskeard, in northeastern Ontario.

No one knows what happened to her since.

"It's easy to get lost in thinking of our missing child every day," Celine Ethier says. "Because especially at first it's like our heart stops beating. We're just surviving."

More than 20 years later, Celine Ethier still searches for answers in daughter’s disappearance

http://globalnews.ca/news/3278576/more-than-20-years-later-ontario-mom-searches-for-answers-in-daughters-disappearance/

Celine Ethier is still haunted by the disappearance of her daughter from a small town in northern Ontario more than two decades ago, but every day she fights for answers.

After two decades, Ethier said she has come to terms with the idea that her daughter may no longer be alive.

Now she is worried that whoever may have the answers could die before revealing what they know to the police.

“I believe someone has the answer. But my biggest worry is that they take the information to their grave.”

Laxton said the investigation “remains an active and ongoing” one but couldn’t offer any new details, information or tips on the case as it could “potentially compromise our investigative efforts that have taken place over the past 20 years.”

“Any investigation of this type is difficult for the investigators who are assigned to the case,” Laxton said in an email. “This case is particularly challenging as it is difficult to find answers to a person’s disappearance when they have literally vanished without a trace.”

The province has also offered a $50,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest or conviction in the case.

Melanie Ethier, just 15 years old at the time, was walking home from a friend’s house in the early hours of Sept. 29, 1996 in New Liskeard, now Temiskaming Shores, about a two-and-a-half hour drive from Sudbury.
“There is no evidence that Ethier left the New Liskeard area on a voluntary basis. All evidence and data collected to date would indicate that Melanie Ethier has met with foul play at the hands of person(s) unknown,” the OPP said at the time.
