GUILTY Canada - Melissa Peacock, 20, Dartmouth NS, 7 Nov 2011

Melissa Dawn Peacock, 20, was last seen at her residence on Nov. 7. Her family reported her missing to police two days later.

According to a police news release, they initially had conflicting information which made it unclear if she was missing or had gone off on her own. She had been known to go off on her own previously, but never for such a long time and never without staying in contact with her family and friends.

Authorities seek help to locate Melissa Peacock

According to her mother, Ruth Slauenwhite, the last communication she received was a text message saying she was heading to the country with a friend and didn't want to be there.

Asked if there is a chance she is outside the province, Const. Brian Palmeter said: “I guess we have to be open to that possibility."

Peacock told her mother that she had fallen in with a bad crowd. She didn’t explain what she meant, and her mother didn’t push.

“So that does concern me," Ruth Slauenwhite said.

Slauenwhite said her best friend, Jenny Swanson, died of cancer Nov. 6. Swanson had acted as a surrogate mother to Peacock and

the young woman was devastated by her death, Slauenwhite said. Peacock disappeared the next day.

Peacock was also close to Dillon Jewett, an 18-year-old Dart*mouth man who was fatally shot in October 2010.

Peacock started a Facebook memorial page for her friend and talked to The Chronicle Herald about his kindness.

“We knew that she was hurting," her stepfather said. “But for Melissa to just leave the house and have no contact with us whatsoever, it just does not make any sense to us."

Melissa Peacock is described as a black woman with very light skin.

She is 5-1, 105 pounds and has brown, curly hair and hazel eyes.

“Basically we’re trying to light the darkness,” said family friend Evette Awalt.

Police say there’s no evidence of foul play and Peacock was known to take off for periods at a time. Her family and friends say she always kept in touch whenever she left and they haven’t heard a word from her in two weeks.

“There’s been some text messages the day she left, or just after she left that were worrisome,” said Awalt.

“They said she didn’t want to be where she was — wherever that was — and that she wanted to come home and that she was sorry."

Melissa Dawn Peacock has been missing since Monday November 7,2011. She was last seen around the Ocean Breeze Apartments on Windmill Rd. Dartmouth Nova Scotia. (Under the MacKay bridge)
