This is wonderful news – in Melbourne's Herald-Sun today (ie Australian newspaper):

Zahra's Law comes into effect in US state of North Carolina
AAP From: AAP December 02, 2011 6:37AM

A TOUGH new law inspired by the murder and dismemberment of 10-year-old disabled Australian schoolgirl Zahra Baker has come into effect in North Carolina.

Zahra's Law makes dismembering human remains in North Carolina a Class 1 felony, allowing prosecutors to seek stiff penalties against offenders.

The law also makes it a felony to secretly dispose of a body or conceal a death.

Baker, born in the NSW country town of Wagga Wagga, moved with her father, Adam Baker, to the US after he met North Carolina woman Elisa Baker online and wed.

Elisa, 43, entered a guilty plea to Zahra's murder and dismemberment in September and is serving a 15 year prison sentence that outraged the local community because it was considered not harsh enough.

Zahra, who at the age of five had her lower left leg amputated after battling bone cancer, was reported missing from the family's Hickory, North Carolina, home on October 9, 2010, and weeks later parts of her body and prosthetic leg were found tossed in bushland.

Article in the Charlotte Observer:

'Zahra's Law' goes into effect today
By Cleve R. Wootson Jr. and April Bethea

Nearly three dozen laws go into effect in North Carolina today, including legislation inspired by the deaths of a teenager and 9-year-old from the Charlotte region.

Among the legislation on the list is a law that would make it a felony to disturb or dismember a corpse.

State Rep. Mark Hilton, a Republican from Conover, told the Observer this summer that he was approached by the Catawba District Attorney's Office to get the legislation introduced as investigators were working on the Zahra Baker case.

The 9-year-old from Hickory was killed and her body scattered in 2010. Zahra's stepmother, Elisa Baker, was sentenced to 15 to 18 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and other charges in connection to the girl's death...

Thanks, just thought I'd put this out here as the first of Zahras law maybe about to happen. I think it's a good thing considering all the dismemberment murders I've seen posted lately.

The death and dismemberment of Zahra Baker inspired a new state law that went into effect December 1st. It makes it a felony to conceal a death, secretly bury or dispose of a body and to willfully dismember or destroy human remains. If prosecutors choose to charge Michael Wilkie with this new criminal offense he would be among the first if not the first in the state charged with it. After allegedly killing his wife in their Henderson County home investigators say Wilkie tried to destroy Shelby's body by burning it in a 55 gallon burn barrel in the backyard. Court records state he later drove the barrel, with his wife's remains, to his parents property on Kanuga Lake Road. Wilkie is charged with first degree murder and investigators say he confessed to killing his wife. The case is still being investigated and prosecutors aren't commenting on any potential charges.
