Has The "God Particle" Been Found?
    Major Announcement Expected Tuesday

    snip-
The world of physics is abuzz with speculation over an announcement expected Tuesday, Dec. 13, from the CERN laboratory in Geneva -- home of the world's largest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

The announcement, planned for 8 a.m. EST (2 p.m. CET), will address the status of the search for the elusive Higgs boson particle, sometimes called the "God Particle" because of its importance to science.

The future has many names: for the fearful it's the unknown, for the reckless it's the adventure, for the pessimists it's the unattainable. For the brave, it is opportunity.

'Exciting' potential for new discoveries linked to 'God particle': Canadian physicist

    snip-
Robert Orr, a University of Toronto physicist who was involved with the latest development regarding the Higgs boson particle often called the God particle said Tuesday that if the discovery of one of physics' great mysteries can be confirmed, the possibilities of what else can be found are amazing.

"Once the Higgs matter is settled, we'll be excited by the next 10 or 15 years of new discoveries," Orr told a news conference in Toronto. "And they may be really dramatic new discoveries. Some people think there might be other dimensions of space and time we'll discover."

Orr said the potential for discovery "beyond the standard model (of physics)" serves as an exciting prospect because the discoveries "may be even more intimately connected with the structure of the universe."

All this science and technology of our time is beyond my understanding. I don't even understand yet what makes my television or telephone work! So many amazing discoveries are made all the time. I'm glad there are others who can understand and make use of them to benefit mankind.
