Body found in area where Del. woman went missing

The body was found in the same area where a female resident may have been abducted while walking her dog.

A witness told authorities that while walking in the area he heard what he described as screeching tires and observed a red Hummer SUV with tinted windows parked at the intersection.

The witness also told police, that a black male believed to be in his 30s then put something in the truck, and pulled off.

Several hours later, a patrol officer spotted a red Hummer with tinted windows driving in the same neighborhood.

The vehicle was pulled over, the driver was brought in for questioning, and the car was impounded.

Police on the scene found shoes and a hat on the roadway where the woman was last seen.

About 9:30 a.m. Monday, officers were called to the intersection of Lowell Road and Matson Run Parkway to investigate a suspicious person.

When police arrived, officers found articles of clothing in the road and talked to a witness who told officers that while he was walking in the area, he heard the screeching of tires and saw a red Hummer SUV with tinted windows at the intersection, said Master Sgt. Paul Reutter.

The witness said he saw a man in his 30s putting something into the SUV from the driver's side rear door, and then the man sped off west on East Matson Run Parkway.

A second witness also confirmed the account, Reutter said.

A former soldier who said he became "addicted to killing" while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan pleaded guilty but mentally ill Friday to charges of raping and killing a Delaware woman.

Dwight L. Smith Jr., 28, entered the plea at a Superior Court hearing in Wilmington. He faces a mandatory sentence of life without parole when he is sentenced April 22.
