Missing Person Investigation

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives are seeking help from citizens in finding a 22-year-old West Columbia man who was reported missing to the Sheriff’s Department on Sunday, December 25.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives are seeking help in finding Michael Jody George, 22, of 4029 Edmund Highway, West Columbia. George’s relatives told detectives that it is out of character for George to remain out of contact with relatives on Christmas Day and for George to remain out of contact with relatives for a long period of time.

George is 6-foot and weighs 135 pounds, Metts said. George has brown hair and hazel eyes.

George’s brother, John Olin Wannamaker, contacted the Sheriff’s Department at 2:37 p.m. on Sunday and reported that George was missing, Metts said. Wannamaker told deputies that he last spoke with his brother at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December 23 at George’s home.

George’s father, Gary Frederick George, contacted the Sheriff’s Department at about 8:15 p.m. on Sunday and reported that he found Michael George’s 1994 black Nissan Sentra parked on Beckman Road between Cannaberry Drive and Lena Drive near West Columbia, Metts said. Deputies and detectives conducted a ground search on Sunday and ground and aerial searches using a helicopter on Monday, December 26 in the area where Michael George’s car was found. The searches did not generate any leads concerning Michael George’s whereabouts.

Detectives determined that Michael George became highly intoxicated on Saturday, December 24 while drinking alcohol at a bar on Charleston Highway near Cayce, Metts said.

Michael George and a 33-year-old Swansea man, who is an acquaintance of Michael George, left Shooters bar at 3030 Charleston Highway at about 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, Metts said. The 33-year-old man drove Michael George to the man’s home near Swansea. Michael George later left the 33-year-old man’s home.

Metts asked anyone with information concerning Michael George or Michael George’s whereabouts to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.

According to the comments, it was about 13 miles from Swansea to his car...hope they are checking the Swansea area! And this "acquaintance" .

ETA: ok i mapped from Shooters Bar to Swansea to where car was found...here

I suppose the "acquaintance" could have driven Michael's car to his house then on to area where car was found. I don't know what that white area is...sand pit? But I don't like it one bit!

Wow, strange how much information is being withheld:

According to the report, a person – whose name was deleted from the report – told detectives that George was at Shooters and was “heavily intoxicated” that night. George left Shooter’s around 2:30 a.m. Dec. 24. The unnamed person drove George back to a “residence,” the report said.

Detectives deleted identifying information about that residence.

Detectives processed George’s Nissan for evidence. Allard declined to say what, if anything, detectives found. The car was found by a relative of George’s who was looking for him on Christmas Day.

Body found of S.C. man missing since Christmas 2011

LEXINGTON — Authorities say they've found the body of a Lexington County man who had been missing for two years.

Lexington County Sheriff James Metts said Monday that the body of Michael Jody George has been found in a wooded area near Gaston.

George was 22 years old when he was reported missing on Christmas Day 2011. Investigators say they received a tip earlier this month that George had been buried in the woods and recovered the body Dec. 16.

Authorities haven't determined how George died.

Three people face charges in his death, including murder, kidnapping and accessory after the fact to murder. Deputies say two men kidnapped and killed George, and a woman helped clean up the crime scene.
