Jury selection is under way in the trial of Nanette Johnston, who is accused of plotting to have her lover kill her far older, millionaire fiancé so she could collect on an insurance policy and other assets nearly two decades ago.

Nanette Johnston, 25, was the live-in girlfriend of inventor William McLaughlin, 55, of Newport Beach, in a wealthy, gated community in California.
-------

At the time, Johnston was away from the house at her son’s soccer game, but prosecutors believe she gave her lover — former NFL linebacker Eric Naproski –a key to the house so he could enter and commit the killing, according to a report in the Orange County Register.
------

Naproski was convicted last year of McLaughlin’s first-degree murder. He could get life in prison without parole when he is sentenced on Jan. 20.

Keys are key in millionaire murder trial

Could the key to Nanette Johnston's guilt or innocence be, quite literally, a key?

As we know, police found two keys at the front door of William McLaughlin's home on the night he was shot to death, both left by the shooter. One was in the lock; it had been used to open the door but then became stuck in the corroded lock and the shooter was unable to extract it. The other key was found on the door mat, apparently dropped there by the shooter. This key opened the pedestrian gate that led from a public bike path into the private Balboa Coves community.

The front door key was a copy, believed by the prosecution to have been made at a Tustin hardware store. The exterior gate key found on the mat was distributed by the homeowners association to residents only.

Third husband testifies he was shocked by his wife's murder arrest

SANTA ANA – The third husband of a Ladera Ranch woman standing trial on charges that she orchestrated the slaying of her millionaire boyfriend in 1994 testified Thursday that he was caught by surprise when she was arrested in 2009 after three years of marriage and charged with special-circumstances murder.

William Wayne McNeal told a jury that his world was "completely blown apart" when his wife, Nannette Johnston Packard McNeal, who is also the mother of his young son, was arrested and charged with murdering William Francis McLaughlin, 55, in his Newport Beach home 14 years earlier.

GUILTY!

Nanette Johnston, 46, showed no reaction when court clerk Laura Hoyle read the verdicts: guilty of first degree murder and guilty of the special circumstance of committing murder for financial gain.

The nine-woman, three-man jury in Superior Court Judge William Froeberg's court deliberated for about three hours before reaching the verdicts.
She now faces a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. She will be sentenced May 18.

Have heard this story on a few different shows; the most recent was on the newer ID show, ‘The Perfect Murder’. I'm so glad everyone involved in the case worked as hard and as long as they did to make sure these losers were sent to prison. Listening to Bill's son call 911, struggling desperately to communicate that he needed help as his father lay dying...completely heartbreaking and gut-wrenching. The level of greed and evil in that woman and her "lover" is nauseating. I hope they never get out of their cells for another minute of their lives.

“...[Naposki] refused to enter the courtroom and listen to the victim-impact statements and instead agreed to the continuance by shouting from the courtroom holding cell.

Murphy called Naposki a "gigantic coward" who was afraid to face the two daughters of his murder victim. "This is his final blaze of no class and cowardice," Murphy said...”

That sums it up perfectly.
