UK - Prof. Steven Rawlings, 50, dies after altercation with Oxford don, 12 Jan 2012

Actually only one death here - that of Steven Rawlings:

Oxford don quizzed over the death of professor who was his best friend (with all the hallmarks of a Morse mystery) (Daily Mail)
An Oxford don was being held last night over the death of a colleague with whom he was the ‘best of friends’.

Professor Steven Rawlings, 50, died of a heart attack after he was allegedly beaten up at the home of maths lecturer Dr Devinder Sivia, 49.

Police discovered the professor’s battered body on Wednesday night after they were called about an ‘incident’ at Dr Sivia’s bungalow.
    ---
    Yikes. What might have happened?
A neighbour is said to have tried to save the dying man’s life by desperately pumping his chest. But minutes after officers arrived, Dr Sivia – who was dressed all in white – was led away in handcuffs.

Last night police were trying to establish how the men, who were colleagues in the astrophysics department of the university and co-authored an academic text, fell out. One motive being considered is that they may have argued over ‘academic matters’ at Dr Sivia’s home in Southmoor, near Abingdon.

"Intellectual passion". That's way out of my league.

How sad. A young, gifted, educated man beaten up by one Doc Sivia dies.

What the heck is Bayesian probability theory?

When I was young, I usually only got in fights - physical ones - with my very best friend or friends; it was like, if someone's around the other all the time, sort of tuned in to the same wavelength, with similar or the same expectations of one another, the flipside of the coin of friendship can involve flaring tempers and fisticuffs on occasion. But I'm talking about teenage years, ages, say, 12-16, when the blood naturally runs a little hot. God only knows what happened between these two older best friends.

Prof Rawling's family were struggling to come to terms with their loss today. They said they did not believe that Prof Sivia could have murdered his friend and blamed his death on "a tragic accident".
Linda Davey, 64, Prof Rawling's older sister, said he was not the type of man to get into an argument over anything.

She said: "They have been friends for 30 years. We can't think that there was any kind of fight. We can only assume that it was a terrible accident. Steven was big, but he was gentle."
Whatever's happened here appears to be very sudden. Even the victim's family don't believe that this was intentional.

...The victim, 50, is an astrophysicist who was a leading figure in a $2 billion radioastronomy project known as the Square Kilometer Array, which aims to probe some of the deepest secrets of the universe.

A close friend told how the professor had talked to him at length just hours before he died.

He said that he appeared very troubled and that he had been talking of resigning from Oxford University. He said he was going to seek further advice from his close friend and fellow Oxford don, Dr Sivia.

He added: “He knocked on my door and wanted to chat. This must have been around 4pm on Wednesday.

“I could tell he wanted to get some things off his chest.

“He had a very intense job and he was a very intense person.

“He had had a breakdown last year and on that occasion was found...

The Sikh academic then had dinner with Professor Rawlings at a pub before taking his friend of more than 30 years back to his home.

He told his family that Professor Rawlings, 50, was ‘very emotional’, attacked him and collapsed with a suspected heart attack while he was restraining him.

Dr Sivia, 49, was arrested on suspicion of murder, but later released on police bail.

Detectives believe no criminal offence was committed.
Such a shame. I feel awful for everyone involved.

An Oxford University professor, who was receiving treatment for mental health problems, died of a cardiac arrest after being put in a headlock by a long-standing friend and colleague who was trying to restrain him during a fight, an inquest heard on Wednesday.
    This is so, so sad
