Because they suspected foul play, the investigators went into the house. They didn’t find anyone but did notice things that could indicate a crime had been committed, the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff’s office wouldn’t release any other details about the case.
However, law enforcement officials in Stonewall, La. confirmed they are holding 52-year-old Thomas Taunton in connection with the case.

Man suspected of killing 3 family members arrested

Neighbors identified the couple as Harold and Sue Harpst, who live just outside of Leonard in southwestern Fannin County.
Mr. Harpst is a double leg amputee and a diabetic. The couple's daughter moved into the ranch home to care for her elderly parents several years ago, neighbors said.

Authorities seized a 16-foot enclosed trailer and truck and Texas Rangers and Fannin County deputies are headed to the location with a search warrant.
While Tauton told authorities only personal belongings and clothing are inside the trailer, authorities suspect the three bodies of the missing families members may be inside.

Three bodies found near a barn just outside Sherman are believed to be an elderly Fannin County couple and their adult daughter, who went missing this week are feared dead.

The Dallas County medical examiner's office will conduct autopsies to determine if the remains are those of Harold Harpst, 73, Sue Harpst, 79, and her daughter Regina Taunton, 48, Fannin County Sheriff Donnie Foster said Saturday.

"We want the public to know that we believe that this is that family," Foster told WFAA (Channel 8). "We want closure."

Suspect Taunton remains in the Louisiana jail. Foster said the suspect has the option of waiving extradition and, if he does not fight to stay there, Fannin County S.O. will immediately head for DeSoto Parish to pick him up. If he fights extradition, the Sheriff’s Office will obtain a “governor’s warrant,” to have him returned to Texas. That could take weeks to accomplish, he said.
