CA - Surgeon in teen sex case found dead in Mammoth

    By JEFF WILSON, Associated Press
    SFGate, Wednesday, January 25, 2012

A Mammoth Lakes surgeon charged with sex crimes against a 14-year-old Santa Barbara girl has been found dead by his wife two weeks after he posted bail and was outfitted with a GPS ankle tracking device, authorities said Wednesday.

The GPS tracking device was used Tuesday afternoon to find the body of Dr. Andrew Bourne, 46, in the Hot Creek fish hatchery area near Bourne's Mammoth Lakes home, his attorney Ron Bamieh and Mono County sheriff's spokeswoman Jennifer Hansen said.

The cause of death will be determined by the Inyo County coroner's office in Bishop.

Bourne and co-defendant Joseph Walker, 48, were arrested Jan. 4 and charged with sexual misconduct with the teenager in a case that stretched from the eastern Sierra Nevada resort to the Santa Barbara coast.

Bourne was charged with eight counts of contacting a child with intent to commit a sexual crime and Walker was charged with one count of a committing a lewd act on a child and six counts of contacting a child with intent to commit a sexual crime.

    They both pleaded not guilty.

Well, isn't that strange? His lawyer informs him that he has a viable case, and he turns up dead? sounds like maybe he didn't agree....

Now, even with a sense of unease over the charges, the community is rallying around Bourne's memory. His friends set up a tribute to him and its location had to be changed three times to accommodate more people. It finally was set for a lodge at the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area that can hold 1,000 people a big turnout anywhere, but massive in a town of 8,000.

Many cases do not have a thread. Please feel free to start one in the appropriate forum if you would like to look into one. Should you start a thread on one of these cases, please let me know so that I can add the link to the spreadsheet.

Now his buddy Joseph T Walker stands alone. Quite a pair these two grown men.

What really got me was that Walker accompanied Dr. Bourne on "at least one" out of the country trip to provide free medical care to those in need. I bet. Always helpful to the poor these guys.
