SAN ANDREAS (CBS13) – Sheriff’s deputies from San Joaquin and Calaveras counties searched the property Wednesday and resumed on Thursday before the skull was found about 11 a.m. San Joaquin sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Les Garcia said the Department of Justice had been called in to do DNA testing.

This might be the first victim's remains discovered using maps provided to LE by "Speed Freak Killer Wesley" Howard Shermantine. In 2000, he and his partner, Loren Herzog, were convicted of multiple murders that occurred between 1984-1999. Only two bodies were recovered. Shermantine now says there were at least ten victims, possibly more.

Cyndi Vanderheiden, 25, was one of the victims. Her father received a phone call today to inform him that a skull had been found.

Some background:
In 2005, Herzog's convictions were reduced to manslaughter and his sentence reduced to 14 years and time served. In October, 2010, Herzog was granted parole. After Herzog's parole, his partner Shermantine decided to start talking. From death row, he's been working with LE and bounty hunter Leonard Padilla, providing maps and other information to aid in the searches. Herzog committed suicide on January 17, 2012, after Padilla placed a call to advise him that he might need a lawyer because Shermantine was fingering him for the murders. Later that day, Herzog committed suicide.

Hayward

Investigators in Hayward believe a nine-year-old girl missing since 1988 could be linked to the “Speed Freak Killers”, Wesley Shermantine and Loren Herzog.

Machaela Joy Garecht went missing on November 19, 1988. The nine-year-old girl was kidnapped in front of a Hayward market in broad daylight. According to a website dedicated to finding Garecht, she was taken by a man and pulled into a car as her friend watched.

Mmmm-Calaveras County is nowhere near San Andreas...

Second set of remains found:

SAN ANDREAS – San Joaquin County Sheriff’s authorities say they found another set of remains Friday, these in the spot where death-row inmate Wes Shermantine said he buried Chevelle “Chevy” Wheeler in 1985.

This is the second find in the past two days and the third day in a row of a digging campaign by the San Joaquin and Calaveras Sheriff’s offices. On Thursday, authorities reported finding a skull and several bones, which the Sheriff’s Office believes to be those of Cyndi Vanderheiden.

SAN ANDREAS - Searchers recovered a second set of human remains Friday and, using dental records, identified the skull found a day earlier as that of Cyndi Vanderheiden.

Paula Wheeler, the mother of 16-year-old Stockton girl Chevelle "Chevy" Wheeler, received a call from investigators telling her that along with a partial skull and bones, they also found on her a sweatshirt and lavender jacket.

At least we know two families will have closure soon! Might not be the way they were praying for but they can finally have closure.

I wonder if Shermantine and/or Herzog were responsible for the disappearance of Gail Marks:

The timeframe and location are right. The presumed remains of Wheeler and Vanderheiden were found only 20 miles from Stockton.

The new find brings the total up to 3 skulls now.

San Andreas is the county seat of Calaveras County. [You may be thinking of San Andreas fault, which is not near Calaveras county. ]

We used to have a ski cabin near the town of San Andreas, right outside of Bear Valley in Calaveras County. [ back when I was a kid]

Two have been identified. I wonder who the third is?

Kimster is there a link where the second one has been Identified? I believe you I just can't find it. I heard last night they think the second one is the Wheeler one. The two killers I know have been linked goat least 15 murders.

Never mind I just found on the ABC news link that they also found the clothes she was wearing the day she went missing.

This is one of those cases where our UID forum and our Serial Killer forum merge. I was reading about it in the SK forum: CA The Speed Freak Killers (Shermantine talks; Herzog commits suicide) - Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community

The links there state that Cyndi Vanderheiden and Chevelle "Chevy" Wheeler are the two that have been identified, although Chevy still needs her DNA test to make it official.

The bounty hunter made a deal with the serial killer that if he led them to a positively identified body he would pay Shermantine $18,000, clearing his restitution bill and allowing him to buy candy bars and prisoner perks from the commissary, Padilla said. The bounty hunter has promised an additional $15,000 for a positive ID on a second body.

While I know these victims need to be identified and to come home to their loved ones I squirm at the thought of a serial killer earning $33,000 for his crimes.

From what I read the other day is most of the money is going for restitution to the victims families. Because until that is paid the SOB cant buy any candy bars from the commissary that he gas been craving .IMHO as long as he only gets money for his sweet tooth and the families finally get closure and who knows how many families it does not really bother me that much.
