NY Teacher Has 5th Grade Students Send Jail Mail

    What the what?

Melissa Dean a teacher in Queens had her 5th graders send holiday wishes to a man that had child pornography on a disc. He wasn't convicted of that crime, but was locked up none the less. The kids sent holiday greetings and included their names and some had their addresses.

The mail had been intercepted thank goodness. Who knows where all those letters would have wound up in the prison system.

    Ya know? Seriously.

Oh my goodness - what poor judgment! WHAT possessed her to think that was a good idea?

From the link in the OP:

The city's special commissioner of investigation, Richard Condon, says Melissa Dean, 31, had her P.S. 143 class send cards to her friend, John Coccarelli, and that she did not ask permission from parents or the school.

With this type of judgement, I don't know how the school district can keep her employed.

Brilliant, simply brilliant. If this is the type of person the teacher has contact with, that alone should disqualify her from being a teacher. The whole card fiasco is really frightening, especially as some of them had actual addresses.

Thread: Most interesting classic unsolved murder cases

This thread currently has over 350 cases with a brief synopsis of each and we are still adding additional cases.

You can access a spreadsheet that lists the cases in alphabetical order with the page & post number so that you can locate a particular case you may be interested in. It also contains links to any cases that already have a thread on WS.

Many cases do not have a thread. Please feel free to start one in the appropriate forum if you would like to look into one. Should you start a thread on one of these cases, please let me know so that I can add the link to the spreadsheet.

I could see, with parental and school permission, some sort of very carefully monitored penpal/mentoring program for rehabilitated inmates, perhaps to discourage drug use, drunk driving, things like that. I could see how such a program could be beneficial to both students and inmates.

That is certainly not the case here. I'm still stunned by her complete lack of judgment. She certainly has no place in the classroom.

Gahhhhhhhhhhhh, this chick is a piece of work.

The convicted felon is her boyfriend. That much was garnered by her own card in with the children's cards that said "From your wifey". Glad she's down with the slang. She should be. She visited this guy 312 times in the span of a few months. Hey, whatever, but having kids write cards with their names on them and some addy's. Well at least one had an addy. Kids were encourgaed to write personal information.

Can you imagine being a parent and your fifth grader gets jail mail? "Wifey Teacher" also took the time in her own writing to include the names of the child in back of the card. If we can find addy's for people with unique names we think these very, very resourceful men with weapons charges couldn't?

Ana that is very thoughtful. I probably won't be received well for this, but I wouldn't want my child being part of that. I do understand the social issues. In some ways I am a bleeding heart. However when it comes to jail mail supervised or otherwise I would not want my child to participate.

Ironically my DD is grown and is involved in a books for prisoners program. Collecting them that is for an orginization. She's involved in alot of issues to make people socially aware. Hey, that's wonderful. However, I told her that her liberal self better never, ever, ever be sending jail mail or receiving it. Filly draws the line with that stuff. If she did I'll tell her to go get tuition, clothing and such off her penpal. I scared her enough I hope.

    I'm an awful person.

In real life, it probably wouldn't work. It would have to be so carefully monitored, the participants so carefully vetted - because your concerns are totally valid. Mostly it was just throwing out a hypo of "well, I wouldn't be as outraged if it were a program like this..." more than a thought-out proposal.

My very first thought was that she was one of those women who got caught up in writing with this inmate and they fell in love, so she had her class write her new loverboy letters.

I can't help but laugh a little at stories like this....where does a person who is a teacher get such bad judgement?! I am so glad the mail never made it to the man.
