Polk County sheriff's deputies say they're looking for a woman suffering from postpartum depression who may have killed her 1-year-old child this week.

Detectives have put out a statewide alert for authorities to be on the lookout for 32-year-old Neha Patel, who authorities say may also be suicidal.

Her husband, Rasesh Patel, became alarmed about 10:30 a.m. Thursday when he called home repeatedly from work to check on his wife, but she didn't answer.
------

[After she returned with the child in a blanket] Deputies say she at first refused to tell her husband what happened, but eventually explained that she'd killed the baby, named Ishan, earlier that day.

She climbed into bed and refused to talk, deputies said, but became enraged when she overheard her husband calling her father. She again left the home.

Deputies say Rasesh Patel attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but the baby had been dead for some time. Neha Patel has not been seen since.

Detectives say Neha's credit card was used at 5:26 a.m. Friday at a parking garage at Tampa International Airport, then 5:33 a.m. at a 7-Eleven gas station in Tampa.

Her vehicle is described as a light-blue 2008 Toyota Sienna van, with Florida tag A100NJ. Neha, who quit her pharmacist job on Sunday, is considered both a homicide suspect and missing person.
------

Anyone with information is urged to call 911 or the Polk County Sheriff's Office at 863-298-6200.

Deputies: Mom said she hated baby, killed him

Detectives say Neha Patel has hated her 1-year-old son, Ishan, from the day he was born. On Thursday, investigators say, she put him in a half-full bathtub and let him drown.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office said Patel confessed to the details after a manhunt Friday led to her arrest at a Tampa airport, where she had planned to end her life.

Investigators say Patel put her son in the bath for 10 minutes, returning to find he wasn't breathing. Though she knows CPR, she elected to let him die, deputies say.

She clothed the baby and drove with his corpse to Ocala, and then to Tampa International Airport, authorities say.
------

Officials say she told detectives that she again had hoped to kill herself, but every time she got ready to jump, someone would walk by. Detectives described her confession as "very candid."

Patel's husband told deputies his wife was suffering from postpartum depression. Detectives say she explained that she hated her baby, and blamed him for her "state of mind."

Patel was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail on a Polk County first-degree murder warrant on Friday.

In a statement, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd described the case as sickening. Thinking about the "torture" Ishan suffered, he said, is "beyond imagination."

"Our love for children, and our desire to protect children, is unlimited — the only solace there is in this case is that Neha Patel will not be able to hurt another child," Judd said.

I feel so sorry for the father....Rest in peace, little Ishan

I am sorry for the father but why wasn't this baby protected?

This statement really bothered me ..does this mean she was really abusive before she lost it ...

If so the father should really be asked some questions.

Wow. What an adorable little guy. Ishan was born premature and spent four months in the hospital. Along with the drowning there was blunt force trauma to his little face.

JMO, but this isn't the picture of a stable woman. Red flags too as she quit her job at CVS recently. I was wondering if she had treatment and see the husband said she quit taking her med's.

Mental illness is still very much taboo in Indian culture. I also figured she had no family here to help. The husband called the dad so I am thinking maybe she does have family here.

So sad. RIP little Ishan.

In addition to murder,
Patel faces two other criminal charges.

She is accused of aggravated manslaughter of a child for "failing to provide supervision"
to her 1-year-old son, Ishan R. Patel, while the boy was "in a garden tub half filled with water," according to the grand jury's indictment returned Thursday.

Patel also is charged with aggravated child abuse for "violently striking" the boy, the indictment states.

How could anyone not love that baby ?

What a beautiful little prince. :( RIP little one.

Did anybody else think that a 1 year old is likely to be sitting up and would most likely NOT just lie in a bath tub with his head under water without a fight?

We have to remember that she also smacked him in the face/head first... to keep him from coming near her.
Then she put him in his crib... BEFORE putting him in the tub.

So he might have been less than fully awake when he was put in the tub.
They did call it "violently striking" and "blunt force trauma" to his face and head...

I am sorry for the father but why wasn't this baby protected?

There was red flags all over the place.
I can't find another update on the case... but this is a bit more on the repeated suicide threats...
Yet this woman is left alone with the child she hates. :waitasec:

He said Patel had threatened to harm herself before and was suffering from postpartum depression — but wasn't taking her medicine.

----------------------

Judd said Patel has been acting erratically all week. She abruptly quit her job as a CVS pharmacist on Feb. 12, and her husband told officers that she spoke of jumping off a bridge or building.
She also mentioned that she would like to die in the Smoky Mountains
, Judd added.

Cannot find any updates on this case either.
She is still in custody in Polk County Jail.

A judge was given wide discretion when it came to deciding the fate of Neha Patel. She could have received anything from time served up to 30 years in prison. But after hearing testimony about Patel's significant mental health problems, Circuit Judge Donald Jacobsen concluded that Patel should serve two years of house arrest followed by 12 years of probation...

Instead of taking the case to trial, prosecutors and defense lawyers negotiated a plea deal for Neha Patel, and left her sentence in the judge's hands. She pleaded no contest to aggravated manslaughter of a child...

The judge warned Patel that if she violates conditions of her house arrest or probation that she could face up to 30 years in prison. He ordered that Patel continue to take her prescribed medicine and follow her mental health treatment. She is subject to drug testing to prove she is taking her medicine.
