Background: in 1974 Lord Lucan (Wiki), estranged from his wife and children, returned to their home intent, apparently, on killing his wife; after entering he encountered a woman he thought was she, and attacked and killed her. It was the nanny, Mrs Rivett. His wife soon appeared and Lucan beat her savagely although not fatally. He then disappeared, his crime noteworthy, his being a lord of the realm, and soon a topic in popular culture (see video below, a later cover of the Dodgems' 1978 single), and national memory. At the time it was correctly pointed out that if, say, you or I killed someone, the headlines would read that we were sought for a vicious murder; bowing to Lucan's lofty title, newspapers of the time summoned forth headlines which only proclaimed him "missing."

'I helped Lord Lucan live a secret life in Africa': Incredible
new claims from aide to one of fugitive peer's wealthy friends
(Daily Mail)
A woman has revealed Lord Lucan was living a secret life in Africa in the 1980s after he went missing.

The theory has been confirmed by a former detective detective who said he received a tip-off from a credible witness that Lucan was living on the continent.

The mystery surrounding his disappearance after 38-years has led to more than 70 sightings of him in countries like South Africa, Australia, Ireland and the Netherlands.

At one point he was also reported to be living in a Land Rover with a goat called Camilla in New Zealand.

But now the woman, who worked for one of his gambling acquaintances, the late John Aspinall, has revealed to the BBC she arranged flights for his children to Africa so he could view them 'from a distance'.

Multi-part documentary on YouTube: The Lord Lucan Story.

The ultimate English, upper class rotter and cad. His wife had terrible mental health problems caused by his behaviour. I had always hoped that he was at the bottom of the Channel somewhere being eaten by the local fish

Lucan's great-great-grandfather, the 3rd Earl of Lucan, gave the direct command which set in motion the disastrous Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War in 1854.

Not a surprise. "Into the valley of Death / Rode the six hundred."

Lol, I didn't know this
Since his disappearance, many alleged sightings of Lucan have been reported from all over the world, but police have drawn a blank in their efforts to find the runaway aristocrat. In December 1974, police in Australia arrested a man they believed was Lucan but who was in fact the British MP John Stonehouse, who had faked his suicide a month earlier

That and the "reported to be living in a Land Rover in New Zealand with a goat called Camilla" are classic Lucan lore, lol.

Despite the new story I'm still going with the "drowned himself off the south coast at Newhaven" surmise. Rotter indeed, him.

That reads like a script from Monty Python!

Truth is stranger than we can imagine.

Witnesses reveal Lord Lucan's 'secret life in Africa'
---
Bob Polkinghorne, a former detective inspector who worked on the Lucan inquiry when it was being dealt with as a cold case during the 1980s, also said: "The word was he was in Africa.

"Lady Lucan, I am quite convinced, didn't think he was dead."

He said a further confirmation that Lucan was alive came from a reliable witness who saw one of Lucan's close acquaintances in the early 1980s as he holidayed in Africa.

Mr Polkinghorne said: "He was surprised to see this acquaintance standing on a bridge.

"After two to three minutes, he was joined by another man who he is adamant was Lord Lucan."

Countess Lucan: I would have helped my husband get away with murder (Telegraph)
The wife of missing aristocrat Lord Lucan, who disappeared after murdering his childrens' nanny, has told how she would have covered up his crime has he not turned on her and left her too badly injured to help.

The Countess of Lucan also admitted she still harbours feelings for her husband, despite the fact he beat her savagely with a lead pipe, leaving her with an inch-long scar on her forehead.

She said: “I remember the happy times. I have three children by him. He is still a part of my life and a part of me, even though it was all so long ago. "If I could have helped him I would have done."
---
Well, again, hm. Then again, she was beaten severely with a lead pipe, so perhaps her response is due to good old honest brain damage. What's she think about this Africa hideout thing then?
She believes Lucan committed suicide by throwing himself off a ferry at Newhaven, East Sussex, and said she did not have him pronounced dead for years as they did not have the money to pay death duties and school fees.

Is this Lord Lucan's watch? Timepiece found in South African
township could hold clue to what happened to fugitive aristocra
t
(Daily Mail)
Since Lord Lucan vanished following the murder of his children's nanny in 1974, theories regarding his fate have been numerous and far-fetched.

However, physical evidence of his fugitive life has been negligible - until last week, when an antiques dealer came across what he claims must be Lucan's watch.

The timepiece is understood to have come from South Africa - where the elusive lord has long thought to have escaped to.
---.
Inscribed on the underside of the watch is the message: 'Presented to Lord "Lucky' Lucan" The Old Fossil' by his friends at the Clermont Club Mayfair December 1967'.

After some digging, Mr Lincoln found photographs of the aristocrat wearing a similar watch.

Story advances even further - well, perhaps:

Lord Lucan sensation: He DID escape to Africa and could still be alive, his brother claims (mirror.co.uk)
---
Hugh Bingham, 72, said the missing earl, who would now be 76, escaped to begin a new life after murdering his children’s nanny 38 years ago.

Breaking his silence for the first time, he said he’s “sure” the aristocrat made good his escape and started a new life for himself after the brutal killing.
---
Lucan’s younger brother moved to South Africa just six months after the killing and has lived away from the glare of publicity ever since.
---
“There are all sorts of possibilities and lots of things puzzle me but I am not sure I want to share them with anyone.”

However, when asked if he thought his brother had fled to Africa, he declared: “I am sure he did, yes. But what connection there is I don’t know.”
---
“I wouldn’t like to form an opinion as to his whereabouts today or whether he is alive or dead.

“The last time I had contact with my brother was a long, long time ago before the incident, lost in the mists of time.”

This story continues to have legs. Short legs perhaps, but legs.

Lord Lucan transformed face with cosmetic surgery and fled to Africa
to elude police, claims the detective who spent five years on his trail

Lord Lucan is living abroad after transforming his features though major plastic surgery, the retired detective who spent five years on his trail has claimed.

Former Det Chief Supt Drummond Marvin, 78, said he believes the fugitive aristocrat may have eluded police for the last 38 years by undergoing a face-changing operation paid for by his sympathetic millionaire friends.

Mr Marvin also joined a growing chorus of speculation that the louche playboy fled to an African bolthole where a number of people he knew owned gold and diamond mines.

Is this African lodge the key to the mystery of Lord Lucan? Startling new
claims suggest trip to Namibia by aristocrat's son had an extraordinary twist

off-topic tidbit

When police were first searching for Lucan, they broke into the bachelor pad he was renting during his marriage break-up at 27A Elizabeth Street, Belgravia, a five-minute walk from the family home, and found a veritable hoard of Nazi memorabilia.

The flat had been transformed by Lucan into a shrine to Hitler: tapes of the Fuhrer’s speeches were piled high and a copy of Mein Kampf — Hitler’s own published tract on Nazism — was found on the coffee table.

'I helped Lord Lucan live as an African fugitive': Aide to peer's friend claims she helped
Britain's most notorious murder suspect see his children - and that he was alive until 2000

A former personal assistant to a friend of Lord Lucan has claimed she helped
the disgraced peer live a secret life in Africa while he was on the run for murder.

Several stories have suggested that the fugitive peer fled to West Africa following the murder of his children's nanny 40 years ago, but new revelations which emerged today are the first time anyone has put their name to the mysterious plot to help Lucan stay hidden.
---
Now the personal assistant to Lucan's casino owner friend John Aspinall has come forward to further claims that Lucan was living in Africa in the early 1980s, and that the peer's children were also flown out to see him more than once.

Shirley Robey, who worked at a casino in her twenties, said she was party to the plot to keep Lucan hidden in West Africa, and also twice booked air travel for Lucan's children to Africa.

'My dad died on night of nanny's murder': Son insists Lord Lucan drowned himself in the English Channel (Sunday Mirror)
---
“Dad adored boats,” [Geroge Bingham] says. “He even built a powerboat.

"As a seaman, he would have known that if you jump from a boat in the English Channel, you will bloat, float and be washed up with the tides.
---
“It seems very likely he would have had access to a small motor boat somewhere in Newhaven harbour.

“He would have got on board with a bottle of whisky and some pills and taken it out to the 50 metre mark, the point where if you go down you’re not going to come back up again, but not so far out that you are in the shipping lane.

“As the pills kicked in, he would have opened up the bottom of the boat and let the water in.

“It would have taken just 10 minutes for it to sink, but by then he would have been passing out.

“I am sure, without an ounce of doubt, it happened before dawn lifted on the morning after Sandra’s murder.”

Brother 'claims Lucan escaped to Africa and died in 2004':
Murder victim's son reveals explosive off-camera admission
(Sunday Mail)
Lord Lucan’s brother has told the BBC that the fugitive aristocrat died in 2004 and is buried in Africa.

Hugh Bingham is said to have made the startling disclosure in an ‘unguarded moment’ after an interview at his Johannesburg home.

When the cameras stopped rolling, he was pressed by a journalist on the Inside Out programme about whether Lucan – accused of murdering his children’s nanny, Sandra Rivett, in 1974 – was ‘dead or alive’.

Mr Bingham, 72, replied: ‘I know for a fact my brother died in 2004 and that his grave is in Africa.’
