    SC - Tom Sponseller, 61, Columbia, 18 Feb 2012

This is the father of a friend of mine from high school. He was last seen on Saturday at work around noon in Columbia, SC. This is VERY out of character for him to not have contact with his family. He is very active in the community and is the SC Hospitality President.

Sponseller, 61, a Citadel graduate, was last seen in downtown Columbia on Saturday at work around noon, police said. Sponseller’s car is not missing, police said.

A family member reported him missing at the Columbia Police Department on Saturday night.

His cell phone may have give out and he doesn't remember phone numbers.

The story says his car is not missing, was it found at work or someplace else?

Did he have a wife, girlfriend?

He is married with adult kids and grandkids. I don't think he took a vehicle to work. He may have taken a cab or walked.

I wonder if he also got a ride with someone? If he walked I'd be retracing his steps, figuring and walking each route he could have taken.

It is too far to walk, so he would have either gotten a cab or a driver or rode with someone. It's about a 20 minute car ride from his work to his home.

I was looking for info online and saw where he was in a really bad car wreck and was air lifted last January (2011). That may be why he no longer drives. I wonder if he had any lasting problems from that accident.

Not sure when he's due to work next or if he misses work. It sounds like time for LE to get his cell phone records and get his last pings. Cab companies should have records of pick-up calls. Wondering if he's near a city bus route or has that been ruled out?

LE can't rule out foul play. Am I reading this correctly that his office is in the same building as LE? Or does the author mean the City of Columbia?

Foul play is not being ruled out of the investigation, according to a spokeswoman for the Columbia Police Department where the lobbyist’s office is located.
Sponseller, 61, was last seen at work in downtown Columbia around noon on Saturday and his car was still in the vicinity, according to police.

ETA: The impression I get is that he did drive to work.

Yes, I am getting the impression that he drove there as well, but the car is Not missing, which is much more concerning to me. If he was last seen around noon, it's likely that he stepped out for lunch or was only working a half day since it was Saturday. There are many restaurants within walking distance. This is the NBSC building where he worked. It's a 12 story building with many other businesses housed there. There is no garage parking here, but there are other nearby garages. He is an executive CEO, so he MAY have had special parking on site, but I don't know either way. Columbia doesn't have a particularly high crime rate, especially in broad daylight on a Saturday afternoon. This is just one block from our state capital and it's absolutely common place for someone to walk to nearby shops or to their parked vehicle without feeling afraid or in any danger.

I hope they've searched the building where he works. I also hope they're checking cell phone pings.

He was reported missing by a family member after he didn't answer his cell phone multiple times. Sponseller, who's the president of the South Carolina Hospitality Association, had been working at an office on Lady Street in downtown Columbia earlier in the day.

Police say they found his car outside where he works.

According to the facebook page, Tom met with coworkers and they saw him last at around noon. His car was parked in the parking garage where he normally parks. They found no signs of a struggle. He's just gone.

This is really odd. I hope he's OK.

I hope they searched the building well. People can get themselves into scary predicaments by not paying attention to where they are going. Open the wrong door, realize you are in a mechanical room or something, then the door shuts and locks behind you. I hope they checked the elevator shafts as well.

"Sponseller is 6 feet 1 inches tall and weighs 160 pounds. He has gray/white hair, hazel eyes, and wears glasses.

Anyone with information should call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC, or e-mail a tip in to Crimestoppers of the Midlands. You can also text information in by texting "TIPSC" plus your message to CRIMES (274637). Either way you choose, your identity will remain anonymous, and you could be eligible for a cash reward."

Very true. It worries me that he isn't answering his cell phone. I hope they have tried to ping and locate it by now. Perhaps he is ill or disabled somehow and can't call for help.

He doesn't sound like the kind of person who would disappear voluntarily. From the sounds of his friends/relatives on the missing Facebook page, he is a very very nice family man and friend with a wonderful wife, children, grandchildren and extended family. I hope he is found OK.
