I wonder if the cruise lines will have trouble enticing people into taking their cruises now?

2 with newsworthy issues seems a bit much.

There were cruise ships plagued with Norovirus in recent weeks, too. One ship was ordered back to Fort Lauderdale by the CDC before the 7-night cruise ended due to a significant number of cases of the highly-contagious stomach virus among passengers and crew.

NAIROBI, Kenya — An Italian cruise liner carrying more than 1,000 people was adrift without power in the pirate-infested Indian Ocean on Monday after a fire erupted in its generator room. The blaze was extinguished without causing any injuries, an official said.

Tug boats from the island nation of Seychelles were steaming toward the drifting Costa Allegra, which had 636 passengers and 413 crew members on board, but they were not expected to arrive until Tuesday afternoon at the earliest.

Based on the quotes of the ship's captain within the above article, there is no clear plan in place for the evacuation of the passengers on this ship. He "expects" people will sleep on the decks. Boy, that sounds like fun. No electricity. No cooking facilities. People are "being kept in the main rooms" and cannot be in their cabins. Bathroom facilities?

After last month's fiasco and now this, I can't imagine anyone booking on this cruise line.

Oh, and about a week ago, 20 passengers returning to their cruise ship from a land-based day trip were robbed at gunpoint by banditos on the west coast of Mexico.

Yikes!

Well let's just add to the list.

22 Carnival Splendor cruise ship passengers robbed in Mexico
The tourists, whose ship had sailed from Long Beach, were on a bus in the jungle near Puerto Vallarta when hooded gunmen took cameras, money, watches and other valuables. No one was hurt.

Twenty-two guests on the Carnival Splendor cruise ship out of Long Beach were robbed at gunpoint in Mexico last week as they traveled by bus from a nature hike in the jungle to the Mexican port city of Puerto Vallarta, according to cruise ship officials and local media reports.

Cruise line: Crippled ship to reach land Thursday

NAIROBI, Kenya — A crippled Italian cruise ship being towed in the Indian Ocean with more than 1,000 people aboard and no air conditioning now won't reach land in the Seychelles until Thursday, officials said.

The cruise ship company said that food, satellite phones and VHF radios would be brought to the Costa Allegra by helicopter. Photos released on Tuesday showed hundreds of people milling on the ship's outside decks, and officials said passengers would sleep there as well instead of in their unlit cabins.

The Costa Allegra has 636 passengers and 413 crew members on board: Among them are 212 Italian, 31 British and eight U.S. passengers. Four of the passengers are children ages 3 or younger.

The ship lost power Monday after a fire in its generator room, which knocked out power to the ship's engines as well as to its lights and air conditioning...

No power means no stabilizers (gyros?)... I betcha there are a load of sea sick passengers. :(

Many years ago (about 40) I was aboard a much smaller cruise ship during a power loss caused by an "electrical problem". The solution offered by the crew was free drinks throughout the power outage, which lasted about 6 hours. I guess their theory was to keep people happy by keeping them drunk.

Don't know if this would or could ever occur nowadays, but it was quite the party at the time. As in some folks "sleeping on the deck" - totally unconscious from overdrinking. It was a Norwegian ship.

VICTORIA, Seychelles — A disabled cruise ship being towed to the Seychelles' main port is expected to arrive Thursday morning — three days after the ship lost power and began drifting in the Indian Ocean. An aviation official said passengers would begin flying to Rome within hours after arrival at port.

The Genoa, Italy-based Costa said the Allegra is being towed to the Seychelles' main port and is expected to arrive at about 9 a.m. local time Thursday (0500 GMT, midnight EST), a little later than reported earlier.

Three planes with a seating capacity of at least 580 passengers were lined up to fly the passengers of the cruise ship Costa Allegra back to Rome, Gilbert Faure, the chief executive of the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority said Wednesday. He said the first plane is tentatively scheduled to leave Thursday afternoon...

In Seychelles, scary moments described aboard ship
By JASON STRAZIUSO, AP

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Hot and tired passengers disembarking from a disabled cruise ship Thursday in the Seychelles said they had prepared to abandon ship when fire broke out in the engine room three days ago, causing smoke to billow from the vessel that was suddenly adrift in waters prowled by pirates.

Life boats were lowered, passengers said. Austrian Thomas Foaller said some passengers began to panic. Couples that were separated were calling out to each other, he said.

Among them were American couple Gordon and Eleanor Bradwell of Athens, Georgia. They were separated when Eleanor went to the couple's room to get a life vest. A crew member had handed the 72-year-old Gordon his own as dark smoke rose from the ship.

"Those were the worst moments," said Gordon...
