GUILTY IN - Jacob Smith, 3, drowned in bathtub, Trafalgar, 27 Feb 2012

From your link:

TRAFALGAR, Ind. (WISH) - A Trafalgar mother with possible mental problems told police she drowned her 3-year-old son, and officers believe she may have then been seeking suicide by cop.

Smith was being held Tuesday at the Johnson County Jail without bond on a charge of murder and a charge of attempted murder for swinging an ax at a police officer, officials say.

Just last week, police officers asked Smith’s mother to take away an ax they said she’d been sleeping with on a regular basis. Smith’s mother did, but apparently her daughter had another.

:(
WHY??????

And why - if mom was SLEEPING WITH AN AX - was the child allowed an unsupervised sleepover?

I have a feeling the grandmother has a lot of explaining to do.

I'm sure she will blame herself for this for a long time. What a hard lesson to learn.
But, the mother didn't have custody FOR A REASON! This child should have never been allowed to stay with his mother.

Such a sad case. Too bad the mother didn't get help before she killed this innocent child.
She is obviously insane.

This is exactly why kids are often placed in foster care instead of with other family members. It is really hard to prevent things like this from happening because grandparents feel pulled in different directions. She probably thought her daughter would NEVER ever harm her little boy. What a tragic thing. :rose:

Horrific - the child was in grandmother's custody, and she allowed mom a 'sleepover'.

From the above article:
The boy's grandparents had custody of him, though a judge recently granted Smith permission to have Jacob one night every week.

This makes absolutely no sense. How in the world could a judge have ordered that with this woman's history. This is horrible.

It sounds from the news article as though this overnight visit happened because of a judge's order rather than a grandmother's inappropriate decision.

I'm wondering if the judge ordered a supervised overnight visit? That would seem more reasonable, since the mom had had the child removed from her care previously.

Little Jacob with his curls...

They need to institutionalize her PRONTO!

Oh, she was already in a padded cell.

Not often enough since CPS has its goal set on re-unification. Which means they rather place children with family members.

From September 2014:

A Johnson County judge today sentenced a Trafalgar woman to 55 years in prison in the drowning death of her 3-year-old son.

Amanda Smith, 35, pleaded guilty but mentally ill to the February 2012 murder of her son Jacob...

Experts have told the court that Smith is schizophrenic; her attorneys had been preparing an insanity defense, which could have sent her to a state mental hospital instead of prison.
