TORRANCE (CBS) — A man who allegedly fled to Mexico in February after killing his 19-year-old girlfriend and her mother in their Redondo Beach apartment pleaded not guilty Tuesday to murder charges.

Jonathan Scott Chacon, 23, is charged with slaying Courtney Bergman and her 59-year-old mother, Vicki Bergman. Their bodies were discovered Feb. 28 in their apartment on the 1900 block of Rockefeller Lane by
one of the victim’s co-workers.

The murder charges include the special circumstance allegations of multiple murders, along with the allegation that he personally used a knife during the crime

The District Attorney’s Office will not seek the death penalty against a Redondo Beach man charged with brutally stabbing his girlfriend and her mother to death in their apartment, a prosecutor said.

Jonathan Scott Chacon, 25, will still face two counts of murder with the special circumstances allegation he committed multiple murders. If convicted of those charges, Chacon would automatically face a sentence of life in prison without a chance for parole...

Houle said Chacon’s trial is scheduled for March 2015.

Chacon was found guilty of both murders. He claimed self-defense, saying that his girlfriend was trying to stab him. While he was killing her, her mother tried to grab a knife and he had to kill her too.

Can you believe it?! Jury didn't buy it. He'll be going away for the rest of his life with no chance of parole. Sentencing is set for May 8.
